O’Connell and Mid Hudson

December
28

After a few days without wrestling, I was going through withdrawals and I’m only the beat writer. It was good to get back today covering wrestling with the O’Connell and Mid Hudson tournaments.

Fox Lane shaded Middletown today by two points, 156.5 to 154.5, to win the O’Connell. The Foxes did this without four starters, including 152-pounder Harrison Cook. Nick Annunziata (130 pounds), Joey Grippi (112) and Steven Rodrigues (96) were champions. Grippi won most outstanding honors for the 96 through 140-pound weight class. He earned this with his 6-2 title-bout victory over East Ramapo’s Djimitry Georges. Grippi scored six points in the third period – a reversal and four back points. Grippi rode Georges the entire second period, setting up his third-period surge. Grippi then outconditioned Georges in the third.

Annunziata had a hard-fought 4-2 win over Ryan Martin. Annunziata used a second-period reversal and third-period takedown to get the win. Rodrigues had to wrestle teammate Peter Grippi in the final and prevailed, 19-6.

Hen Hud finished third behind champions Tim Brophy, who pinned in the 125-pound final, and  Kevin Sarles, sporting a clean-shaven head, who scored an 8-0 major decision in the 189-final.

Yorktown’s Mike Ahearn had a statement win, pinning Hen Hud’s Shane Turrone at 1:30 of the 103-pound final. Ahearn is now 12-0 on the season, but you would never know it because he is under the radar.

Pearl River had two titlists in Jeff Allison (125), who is now a two-time O’Connell champ, and John Coffey (145).

Nyack’s Zeke Stambovsky broke through against Fox Lane’s Tyler Lovas, who had beaten him nine consecutive times. Stambovsky’s first-period takedown was the difference in a 3-1 victory in the 160-pound final.

East Ramapo’s Patrice Castor won his first-ever tournament title, pinning Westlake’s Adam Bello at 3:30. Castor took home most outstanding honors for the 145 through 275-pound weight class.

Westlake’s Ed Mezger was the 152-pound titlist, pinning Pearl River’s Anthony Raimone with 19 seconds remaining in the match.

My colleague Tony Malakian, a former Carmel wrestler/starter from the late 1990s, covered the Mid Hudson and shared the following with me:

Apparently, an ugly situation developed following the 275-pound final, won by Mahopac’s Dave Colombo, 6-4 in overtime. A man came down out of the bleachers and began berating Colombo. Tony M. said it was over the top and lingered for quite some time. Fortunately, according to Tony M., Colombo showed class and just walked away.

Mahopac’s Peter Caruso was unscored, in four matches, on his way to winning the 125-pound title. Tony M. said he has never seen a wrestler just so dominant.

He was quite impressed with Arlington’s Noel Clarke, who dominated in winning the 215-pound title. Just another day’s work for the cerebral, technically-sound Clarke, who is a middleweight wrestling in a heavyweight’s body.

The last note is that Newburgh Free Academy’s Kyle Piaquadio decisioned Mahopac’s Dominick Oddo, 8-4 in the 125-pound final. Should Mahopac and Newburgh Free Academy cross pathes in another team tournament, these two wrestlers will meet again in the final.

what are the best wrestling websites for section 1

  12. jw's

there are no good websites for section 1 you can either go to section 5’s web sit armdrag.com or any of the long island websites can be accessed from nywrestling.com but as long as no one is willing to either host a forum for section 1 or find results for teams and post them, there will be no forum and no good website. There is good coverage in westchester thanks to tony. But besides fox lane, new ro, and jj cr there is no team that he covers in westchester that is a top 10 large school team. so arlington, mahopac, carmel, suffern, north rock dont get the coverage they deserve

Let us, as fans, post results that we run across on the web right here. Maybe Tony can start a new post every week for results only.

Though I am a fan of Fox Lane, I want to see what the sec as a whole is doing in wrestling. I want to see how we fare in LI tourneys, in sec 9 meets, and anywhere that a sec 1 team wrestles.

I think the sports section on the LoHud web site does a good job of covering sec 1 as a whole, but I want more as most of you do also !
