Ardsley, Nanuet and Somers tournaments (Saturday)

January
31

I wish I could be in three places at once on Saturday with the Ardsley, Nanuet and Somers tournaments going on. Maybe I can clone myself for the day? On second thought, forget that, one of me is plenty.

Here is a look at the fields for the respective tournaments:

Ardsley – Beacon, Dobbs Ferry, Sleepy Hollow, New Rochelle, Scarsdale, Washingtonville (Section 9),  Moount Vernon, Walkill (Section 9), Horace Greeley, John Glenn (Section 11), Harrison, Pleasantville, North Rockland, Shoreham-Wading River( led by the Nation’s No. 1-ranked 135-pounder, Corey Jantzen) and Ardsley. Wrestling begins at 9:30 with finals slated for 6 p.m.

Nanuet – The first Golden Knights Classic features Copiague (Section 11), Warwick (Section 9 and coached by former Suffern standout John Canty), Valley Central (Section 9), Monticello (Section 9), Roslyn (Section 8), Port Chester, Nyack, Roy C. Ketcham, East Ramapo, Eastchester and Nanuet. Wrestling commences at 10 with the finals scheduled for 5:45 p.m.

Somers – The traditional spotlight will be shining on the mat for the finals. Carmel, Riverhead (Section 11), Rondout Valley (Section 9), Middletown (Section 9), Edgemont, Yorktown, Pawling, John Jay-East Fishkill and Somers comprise the field. Wrestling opens at 10 a.m. and the finals are slotted for 5:30 p.m.

A great way to close out the regular-season tournament schedule. Beginning next Friday, Feb. 9, will be the large-school divisionals at Clarkstown South and Carmel. They will resume Saturday.

John Jay (Cross River) wins league title

January
31

In five years under the guidance of coach Bill Swertfager, John Jay has progressed from a program that returned to varsity action to league champion.

John Jay’s 60-18 victory over Beacon Wednesday gave the Indians the Conference II League A title.

Swertfager had the John Jay faithful out in full force, promising free tee shirts to the first 300 fans. Based on the increased attendance, the match was switched to John Jay’s main gymnasium.

The fans were treated to pins by Henry Stauber (103 pounds), Billy Watterson (125), Kyle Friedman (152), Nick Schede (160) and Pat Sweeney (215). Greg Scott (171), Matt Barbo (119), Matt Phillips (130) and Scott Genovesi (145) won by decision and Brian DiBetta (135), C.J. Upham (140) and Jake Genovesi (189) won by forfeit.

John Jay is now 19-4 and travels to Fox Lane, 4:30 p.m., for the big match on Friday. Fox Lane assistant coach Anthony Rodrigues verified that the match will be held at the high school instead of the middle school to accomodate the crowd.

Has this reporter been banned from Harrison?

January
31

Harrison had just pulled off its third consecutive team win, in which senior 130-pounder Steven Spinola won the final bout, over Port Chester, sending the partisan crowd at Louis M. Klein Middle School gym into delirium.

The Harrison wrestlers were going crazy, and even Harrison coach and regular blog contributor Vin Nicita showed he still had some ups in his legs. When Spinola pinned to clinch the victory, Nicita went skyward, if you want to call it that, and pumped his fist.

Anyway, following the post-match handshake, Nicita turns to me and says, “You can’t come to any more of our matches. My heart can’t take this.”

I laughed and asked him when his next match was. (Tuesday, home against Tappan Zee). The funny thing is, it’s just a coincidence that the last three Harrison matches, which I’ve covered, came down to the final bout.

On Friday, Jan. 19, Harrison 275-pounder Mike, his teammates call him ‘Beef,’ Protano, pinned in the final match to secure Harrison’s win over White Plains. Last week, freshman 96-pounder Andrew Planamento, who made weight that day by one-half pound, pins in the last match to even the score with arhrival Rye. However, tie-breaker criteria No. 2 is decided by most matches won and Planamento’s victory gave Harrison the criteria, 8 matches won to 7 for Rye.

Today, Steven Spinola, who was pinned by Port Chester’s Johnny Maldonado in the Scarsdale tournament, exacts his revenge. Spinola explained he led 4-0 after one period, then got tired and was eventually pinned.

The match was even at 3-3 heading into the second period. Spinola had choice and selected neutral. As the two wrestlers were moving closer to the mat’s edge and out of bounds, Spinola got a headlock and began initiating a cradle lockup. Once he did, he kept Maldonado in, but Spinola found himself on his back. He quickly fought off and put Maldonado on his back. A few moments later, referee Tom Blank, who also did the Harrison-White Plains match, slapped the mat for the pin and a 37-28 Harrison win.

Coach Nicita, if I get to cover your match Tuesday can you make it four fantastic finishes in-a-row?

Antonioli and Coffey hit century mark in wins

January
31

New Rochelle junior Tom Antonioli and Pearl River junior John Coffey recently registered their 100th career wins.

Antonioli hit No. 100 at the Big 10 tournament in Albany on Saturday. Antonioli went 3-2 on the day and finished fifth. Antonioli joins Eddie Ortiz, Eric Fama and Gregg Rubin in New Rochelle’s 100-win club.

Coffey followed up his Rockland County 145-pound championship Saturday with his milestone win against Irvington. Coffey is Pearl River’s second active wrestler with 100 career wins, along with teammate and fellow Rockland County titlist, 119-pounder Jeff Allison, who has 139.

Coaches, please let me know if you have any female wrestlers on your respective teams. I am doing a feature on female wrestlers and we would like to run a box with the story. The girls that I know of are: Jenna Mega (Suffern), Sophia Veiras (Dobbs Ferry), Eleanor Lewis (a Pelham resident who wrestles for Horace Mann), Meagan Raniolo (Somers) and Paula Cignarele (Hen Hud). Thank you for your help with this.

Somers wins Super 16

January
27

My colleague, Tony Malakian, covered the Super 16 and witnessed Somers overtake Fox Lane. The Tuskers finished with 156 points to Fox Lane’s 153.5 points. John Jay was third (130 points), Mahopac fourth (126.5) and Carmel fifth (124).

   Here are the finals results:

96 – Justis Flamio (Mahopac) over Brian Realbuto (Somers): I think it is safe to say Flamio is the one to beat at 96 pounds come sectional time.

103 – Mike Rose (Carmel) over Penn Gottfried (Ardsley): All Rose does is win and he does so quietly, by a score of 9-1. We’re looking at a Rose-Mike Ahearn (Yorktown) sectional final.

112 – Joey Grippi (Fox Lane) over Joe Hauser (Lakeland/Panas): Grippi defeats Hauser for the second straight week in a tournament final. This time the score was 17-5. Last week Grippi won at Croton.

119 – Danny Manley (Ardsley) over John Rayo (White Plains): A tech fall for Manley who is having a great year. Manley will face Pearl River’s Jeff Allison in the Division II 119-pound sectional final.

125 – Dominick Oddo (Mahopac) over Jeff Almodovar (Ossining): Oddo with a tech (27-11). Oddo and North Rockland’s Marc Zurla in the 125-pound sectional final at Pace in three weeks.

130 – Nick Annunziata (Fox Lane) over Ryan Martin (Hen Hud): For the third time this season Annunziata beats Martin in a tournament final (O’Connell and Shoreline also). However, Tony Malakian said Annunziata had his hands full with Ossinig’s Clay Neivert in the semis. Annunziata fought off of his back and rallied from a 6-0 deficit.

135 – Luke Speno (Fox Lane) over Brian DiBetta (John Jay): Speno beats DiBetta for the second time in two weeks, by tech this time. These two will see each other Friday when John Jay travels to Fox Lane.

140 – John Galea (Lakeland/Panas) gets the win. Tony M. forgot to tell me who the opponent was.

145 – Mike Realbuto (Somers) over Scott Genovese (John Jay): Realbuto by pin.

152 – Kyle Friedman (John Jay) over James Brundage (Ossining): It was a decision. However, in the semis, Friedman had a major over Harrison Cook (Fox Lane), 14-3, and Brundage, roared past Tim Lewis (Somers) in the third for a 6-3 win.

160 – Tyler Lovas (Fox Lane) over Alphonso Rodriguez (Hen Hud): Lovas wins 4-3 in overtime.

171 – Anthony Pecora (Carmel) over Greg Scott (John Jay): Pecora with a 10-3 win.

189 – T.J. Nelson (Somers) over Connor Tompkins (Sleepy Hollow), 7-3.

215 – Pat Koch (Croton) wins by pin in the third period.

275 – Dave Colombo (Mahopac) pins Sleepy Hollow’s John Lopez.

Rockland County Championships

January
27

The Rockland County Championships went the way of North Rockland. The Red Raiders won the team title for the second consecutive year, amassing 238 points to Suffern’s 200.

North Rockland had four champions – MOW Joe Rodriguez (140), Marc Zurla (125), Joe Slane (103) and Christian Garcia – as well as four runners-up – Nick Aquino-Roithmayr (119), Tim Hopkins (160), Matt Gonzalez (145) and J.J. Morales (215) (injured, did not wrestle in the final against Suffern’s Derek Phillips.

Suffern also had four champions – Nick Oliveto (96), Adam DeStefano (130), Andrew Koudlai (189) and Phillips. Clarkstown North was third (157.5 points), led by champion Nick Cifuni (171 pounds) and second-place finishers, Andrew Greenberg (103), Rob Kantrowitz (112) and Steven Ramos (135).

Pearl River had a trio of champions – Jeff Allison (119), John Coffey (145) and Anthony Raimone (152) – for the first time since 1985, according to Pearl River coach Grier Yorks.

Here is a look at the finals:

96 – Nick Oliveto (Suffern) maj. dec. Dom Campitiello (C. South), 19-11: Trailing 3-2 one minute into the first period, Oliveto hit a switch then added three near-fall for a 7-2 lead. Oliveto rang up nine second-period points on a pair of reversals, a takedown, two backs and a penalty point (clasp) for a 16-6 lead.

103 – Joe Slane (North Rockland) maj. dec. Andrew Greenberg (C. North), 16-7: Greenberg grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first, but Slane answered with an escape and a high single. Slane countered a Greenberg takedown attempt in the second period with a switch, then ran a bar and tilted Greenberg. Slane attempted a cradle, got too far over and Greenberg reversed Slane to his back for two backs. Slane led 8-7 entering the third and took off.

112 – Djimitry Georges (East Ramapo) pin. Rob Kantrowitz (C. North), :50: Georges took Kantrowitz down 9 seconds in and immediately went to work on locking up the cradle, which he did.

119 – Jeff Allison (Pearl River) dec. Nick Aquino-Roithmayr (N. Rockland), 10-3: Allison nailed a fireman’s carry which led to him turning Aquino-Roithmayr for 3 additional and a 5-0 lead after one.

125 – Marc Zurla (N. Rockland) pin. Dylan Sanzo (C. South), :25: I was interviewing Djimitry Georges so I missed the pin.

130 – Adam DeStefano (Suffern) dec. Udit Thakur (Nyack), 9-6: Thakur led 2-1 after one and was wrestling tough. DeStefano chose bottom to start the second period and got the switch. Thakur got to his feet, but DeStefano got a single in the final 20 seconds and put Thakur to his back for 2 more backs.

135 – Rich Berkowitz (Nanuet) pin. Steven Ramos (C. North), 1:24:  A takedown 21 seconds in led to Berkowitz attempting to punish Ramos before finishing it.

140 – Joe Rodriguez (N. Rockland) pin. Billy Sullivan (Nyack), :58: Rodriguez gets the takedown 13 seconds in, later locks up the cradle and gets his first County title.

145 – John Coffey (Pearl River) maj. dec. Matt Gonzalez (N. Rockland), 16-5: Gonzalez had the first takedown and led 4-1 one minute in before Coffey reversed Gonzalez to his back and added 2 backs in the final few seconds for an 8-4 lead.

152 – Anthony Raimone (P. River) dec. Sal Marchese (Nyack), 6-2: Raimone takes Marchese down and to his back at the 33-second mark for a quick 4-0 lead, then rides Marchese out. Raimone adds a 3rd-period takedown before a lte Marchese reversal.

160 – Zeke Stambovsky (Nyack) dec. Tim Hopkins (N. Rockland), 8-1: Stambovsky strikes eight seconds in with a takedown, adds a second-period reversal and doubles his lead with a takedown/back points in the third.

171 – Nick Cifuni (C. North) pin. Sal Arena (Nanuet), 3:23: Cifuni nails a double and puts Arena to his back in the final 10 seconds of the first period for a 4-0 lead.

189 – Andrew Koudlai (Suffern) pin. Bobby Whiting (P. River), 3:10: Again, I was interviewing, this time Zeke Stambovsky, and heard the crowd roar. I turned and saw Koudlai had Whiting on his back.

215 – Derek Phillips (Suffern) inj. def. over J.J. Morales (N. Rockland)

275 – Christian Garcia (N. Rockland) pin. Bill Smith (Nanuet), 2:17: After a scoreless first period, Smith opens the second period on bottom and escapes. But Garcia quickly puts Smith, Nanuet’s regular 215-pounder, to his back and Garcia uses his weight advantage on Smith to finish it.

Rockland County Championships predictions

January
26

My Super 16 predicitions landed me in hot water with some of the fans from those respective schools. So, now that I have done it for Super 16, I might as well do the same for the Rockland County Championships.

After consulting the brackets, here are my predictions on the Rockland County Championships, which commence 10 a.m. Saturday at Clarkstown South:

96 - Nick Oliveto (Suffern) over Dom Campitiello (C. South)

103 – Joe Slane (North Rockland) over Andrew Greenberg (C. North)

112 – Djimitry Georges (East Ramapo) over Rob Kantrowitz (C. North)

119 – Jeff Allison (Pearl River) over Nick Aquino-Roithmayr (North Rockland)

125 – Marc Zurla (North Rockland) over Dylan Sanzo (C. South)

130 – Adam DeStefano (Suffern) over Ted Eccleston (North Rockland)

135 – Rich Berkowitz (Nanuet) over Steven Ramos (C. North)

140 – Joe Rodriguez (North Rockland) over Billy Sullivan (Nyack) – The Rodriguez-Corey Campbell (Suffern) semi should be a good one. Rodriguez is probably still angry that he was pinned by Campbell in the Suffern-North Rockland dual earlier this month.

145 – John Coffey (Pearl River) over X-man (Xavier) Maldonado (Nanuet)

152 – Sal Marchese (Nyack) over Anthony Raimone (Pearl River)

160 – Zeke Stambovsky (Nyack) over Tim Hopkins (North Rockland)

171 – Nick Cifuni (C. North) over Salvatore Arena (Nanuet)

189 – Andrew Koudlai (Suffern) over Bobby Whiting (Pearl River)

215 – Derek Phillips (Suffern) over J.J. Morales (North Rockland) – Phillips gets his 100th win in the semifinals.

275 – Christian Garcia (North Rockland) over Bill Smith (Nanuet)

Hopefully, I will still be allowed in the gymnasium Saturday to cover the tournament. If I am, my next hurdle will be reaching the head table without getting pelted by rotten fruit. I might have to ask former Clarkstown South coach John Laurenzi to provide the muscle so I get to the table in one piece.

Super 16 predictions

January
25

Considering the last time I made predictions (Shoreline) I had wrestlers, fans and coaches out to lynch me, why would I consider putting my neck on the line? Well, I figured what the heck. It’s not as if I’m going to lose any hair over this.

So, without any further fanfare, here I go:

96 – Justis Flamio (Mahopac) over Brian Realbuto (Somers). Although, the Steven Rodrigues (Fox Lane)-Realbuto semifinal should be outstanding.

103 – Mike Rose (Carmel) over Penn Gottfried (Ardsley)

112 – Joey Grippi (Fox Lane) over Steve Kasper (Mahopac)

119 – Danny Manley (Ardsley) over Pete Caruso (Mahopac)

125 – Dom Oddo (Mahopac) over Jeff Almodovar (Ossining)

130 – Nick Annunziata (Fox Lane) over Ryan Martin (Hen Hud)

135 – Luke Speno (Fox Lane) over Brian DiBetta (John Jay)

140 – Rich Driscoll (Ardsley) over John Galea (Lakeland/Panas)

145 – Mike Realbuto (Somers) over Genovese (John Jay)

152 – Kyle Friedman (John Jay) over James Brundage (Ossining). What a pair of semis – Friedman-Dom Cappelletti (Mahopac) and Tim Lewis (Somers)-Brundage.

160 – Tyler Lovas (Fox Lane) over Ryan Lyke (Carmel)

171 – Anthony Pecora (Carmel) over Greg Scott (John Jay)

189 – T.J. Nelson (Somers) over Connor Tompkins (Sleepy Hollow)

215 – Chris Vingo (Ardsley) over Pat Koch (Croton)

275 – Dave Colombo (Mahopac) over Travis Gallo (Carmel)

Now that I have jumped from an airplane without a parachute, I am signing off.
