For Artis or whatever your name was- Dom Oddo barely ever even lifts weights. He doesnt even take creatine or protein supplements that many kids take. Nevermind him taking any sort of illegal substance. If you knew him you would understand how rediculous that statement was. He has a muscular build due to his genetics and the fact that he works hard year round so that he can stand on top of the podium rather than hold a silver metal. I think Colombo stated everything needed to be said. No offense to Marc Zurla, who is a very good wrestler, but since Oddo was the underdog everyone has to make excuses about why he won.
And as far as anyone saying anything negative towards Coach Oddo you are absolutely pathetic. You wouldn't even sign your name, which I don't blame you, I would be scared to also if I was badmouthing an Ex-Navy Seal. Coach Oddo has done so much for our Mahopac program and maybe you just said it out of jealousy of the fact that our coaches get one of the smaller amount of wrestlers per year and still come out with several champions. Coach Oddo is one of the smartest and most respectable men I have ever met in my life. It made me sick when I read that comment, how anyone could say that about such a generous man.
Good Luck at states to everyone

To Coach P - I agree with your second thoughts about the wild card. At first I thought the wild card berth might be a good thing but - the win at sectionals should suffice. Why should there be a possibity that a wrestler may have to face the same wrestler that he beat at sectionals to get to states? One guy goes - there is only one 1st place. I'm trying to understand the thought process but ...

Besides, this is an online forum, some people do not see the need to correct every single little grammatical and spelling error in the post, and in the end did you understand what they said? yes. so stop complaining.

To Another Observer (and Dave Colombo)

Well said. Dave was right to speak his mind, and who among us never makes a mistake, anyway. Really. It's more important to have the guts to speak your mind than it is to do it perfectly.

Let's all support our wrestlers as they go to States. They need to concentrate on the task at hand and not get distracted by unimportant things.

Best of luck to all you Section 1 guys. I'm looking forward to watching you take home some gold.

Ok, I know it has been said about throwing unfounded accusations around, but people also need to stop attacking the way these kids write. Dave took a very bold step in putting himself out there in a such a public manner to defend his teammate and coach. That integrity and loyalty says more about who he is than whether or not a word or two was mispelled. I'd rather have a school system that teaches our kids character and how to be a good, honest person than a school system that enables our kids to spell every word right but than to use that ability to viley attack teenagers defending their friends.

DEAR FELLOW WRESTLING FANS

I am sorry to see the season end, but at least I will have more time to do laundry on weekends (that's meant to be humorous for those of you that might not be able to recognize humor)

Thank Heaven for spring wrestling.

So let's get serious for the moment; maybe it's me, but I really feel sorry for those of you that make assinine moronic statements about the character of our wrestlers.

If you want to criticize one of these kid's (remember that's what they are) performance on the mat, go right ahead.

To make false statements & accusations about the possiblity of enhancing drugs is vile B.S. & attacks their character.

Mr. or is it Miss Artis - you lead the pack & are totally absent of character - your diction & spelling are also made out of crap - so please do not brag about Ossining H.S. as it will impune O.H.S.'s reputation.

I know both Dom & Marc - Marc for about 9 years & Dom for about 5 yaers.

Both of them set an example in Sec. 1 as fine upstanding
young men.

Both of them are "A" students as well.

How would you explain that, surely it's not drugs - or are you going to acuse them of taking mind enhancing substances that give them the edge in the classroom.

What does come out of your comments is sour grapes & lack of
character on your part.

Ciao Grasshoppers & if I am lucky I will be at the Empires coaching my 2 sons.

P.S. for translations of the above comments use Websters New Collegiate Dictionary, Roget's Thesaurus & The Book of 5 Rings (LOL)

Dave Columbo
If that is really you, you should be ashamed of yourself. No wonder the taxpayers in Mahopac are ticked off, have you learned anything in 13 years other than how to wrestle.
PS Good luck in 2 weeks and do not let Coach I down.

Probably the most direct explanation how wild-card wrestlers are determined. It's from Don DeBadts, the state wrestling coordinator, as he explained in a Rochester newspaper:

The byes of previous years in each weight class will be filled with at- large wrestlers from around the state this season.

“That means 120 other wrestlers will get the opportunity to compete for a state title, said Don DeBadts of Geneseo, the state wrestling chairman.

That is why there is a week break this year between the SuperSectionals and the state tournament, in order for officials to determine those at- large wrestlers. DeBadts indicated that he hoped to have the state pairings posted online by sometime on Wednesday.

There are numerous criteria for the second- and third-place finishers to determine who receives the at-large berths from around the state.

“Won-loss record. Take the wins and subtract your losses, that’s the points the wrestler gets for that, said DeBadts. “There are bonus points for finishing in the sectionals years before, as many years as the wrestler has gone in his career. There are points for placing in the state meet any year.

“There are power points for how well your section has done in the state meet years before. If you’re in the top four sections, you get 10 power points. The middle four get five, and the bottom four sections won’t get any power points. The better sections will have a better chance of getting the at-large guys in.

I hope someone can track down who is impersonating other people and ban them somehow. Not only is that last poster obviously fake, but quite possibly the posts from the Ossining wrestler from 20 years ago is also.

These people are weak and immature. Track down their IP address and lets ferret out these jerks.

Who thinks that if boersma didnt get hurt so quickly, that he could have upset brundage?

And where do people see brundage, a sophmore, in this years state tournament, and future sectional ( and state ) tournaments?

To Everyone saying bad and untrue things about my Coach and my teamate- Dom oddo jr trains harder then anyone in section one. He won the match its over no amount of complaining can change the fact he now has 2 huge wins over marc. mike artis I laugh at the fact that you think dom is on the "juice" mabey you are just jelous that he is more sucessful then you where. There where 2 kids from section one who went to top notch tournments such as flias and freestyle and grecco nationals in fargo Nd ... Dom oddo and myslef. I got the honor of seeing how that motovated individual trains and I have have the utmost respect for him. I can promise you this he is all natural and ready to win a state title.
As for my Coach, I have a world of respect for this man. He is a detacated coach and father. He is a very sucessful person. He was a great wrestler in his time and still is. That man risked injury by wrestling with me at practices (hes 140-150 i am 260) because he believed that I have a shot at becoming a state champion. If that is not "classy" or respectable then i dont know what is.

WILD CARDS - I just read this post below by a respected blogger on the Long Island Wrestling Site. If it true its terrible for Section 1 and Marc Zurla....

"The weaker sections (those in the bottom 4) were actually informed just prior to sections that they will not be considered for wild card selection and need not submit their point totals.
That officially awards this years NYSPHAA screw job of the year award to Marc Zurla.
Zurla is past state runner up who lost section finals to another returning state place winner."

i cannot believe all the crap that people are writing in. Tony has done a great job of providing people with information and thoughts into section 1 wrestling and it has turned out to be the "Enquirer". Dom Oddo wins the match that everyone had been talking about it and because of that he and his father are getting mud thrown at them. I guess it is not possible for someome to be in great shape unless they use enhancements????? If Marc had won would Marc's name be thrown around? Oddo trains 11 months a year, I would hope he would be in great shape. And he really isn't that big. Again, give credit where credit is due and get on with your day.

I am really having seconds thoughts about the wild card and in particular about stronger sections where a wrestler defeats (as in the case of Zurla-Oddo)a highly ranked wrestler or upsets one and then has to contend with the same wrester at the states. I have issues that an Island wrestler has to defeat the same wrester to place or even win. It is very difficult to defeat a wrestler 2 or three times and the win at sections should suffice. Here's a thought...How about offering the wild card to a div II wrestler?

What defines classy first off? If you are thinking of a person in a suit who says please and thankyou every five seconds then you are retarded. Go ahead look around at a wrestling tournament and point out one person who applies to this. Mr. Oddo deserves respect. He's a Naval Academy Graduate, and a veteran of two wars. If you have something against a person who has put his life on the line for our country then there is seriously something wrong with you.

Ahearns match was the most exciting of the night, even though the points in the last second techincally could be argueable, a tremendous second effort to come out with the win.

Im not going to sit here and say Oddo took steroids, but the amount of effort and practically his life that he put into training is amazing. He grew both physically and mentally, instead of being the "runt" of the match, he looked in better shape then zurla. he was also totally ready for that 3rd period Top attack from zurla, no tilt or cradle was going catch him, thats for sure.

And to whoever called Dom Oddo's father "classy" needs to either osberve the man more at tournaments and dual meets, or just stop kidding themselves.
