Thank you Mr. Raimone …

For your post and putting your name to it. Unfortunately, there are too many individuals who hide behind an alias when they post, especially when it comes to slamming an official, wrestler or coach, or making a prediction.

If you are calling to call out an official, wrestler or coach, have the GUTS to attach your name to it.

For example, here is a post from an obvious Fox Lane fan: “I dought Arcarra would even touch grippi this year Arcarra will prob be 119 i would, i mean hes certified there so its “healthy”

I’m going to say that “healthy” being in quotation marks means Arcara’s health would be in jeopardy if he steps on the mat with Joey Grippi. Well, this would be a match that Section 1 fans would love to see.

If you are going to be so bold as to make this predicition, then attach a name to it.

And for Man in the Stands, you are having a grand old time slamming me and the Journal News. Any time you want to complain about me or the Journal News’ lack of wrestling coverage feel free to call me at 914-696-8234 or email me and sign your name so I know who you are.

O’Connell results

December
28

Here are the team results and finals of the Michael O’Connell tournament at Pearl River.

Two matches of note were the 125-final with Fox Lane’s Joey Grippi scoring a 15-4 major decision over Yorktown’s Mike Ahearn. In the 140-pound final, Fox Lane’s Luke Speno teched Middletown’s Matt Doolittle, 22-6. Yes, that is the correct score. It wasn’t even that close.

 Team standings and key – 1. Fox Lane (FL) 177.5 points; 2. Washingtonville (Wv) 123; 3. Middletown (Mid) 112; 4. Pearl RIver (PR) 72.5; 5. Clarkstown South (CS) 67; 6. Nyack (Nk) 66.5; 7. tie, Yorktown (Yk), Warwick (Ww) 57; 9. East Ramapo (ER) 54; 10. Ellenville (Ell) 47.5; 11. Nanuet (N) 45; 12. Hen Hud (HH) 43; 13. Tappan Zee (TZ) 42; 14. Pawling (Pw) 27; 15. Millbrook (Mb) 11; 16. Peekskill (Pk) 2.5; 17. Woodlands (Wd) 0.

Championship

96 – Asher Kramer (CS) dec. Peter Grippi (FL); 2-1; 103 – Steven Rodrigues (FL) tech. fall Ryan Black (Mid), 21-6; 112 – Pat Fay (FL) tech. fall Joe Caldera (CS), 15-0; 119 – Djimitry Georges (ER) maj. dec. John Morato (N), 17-3; 125 – Joey Grippi (FL) maj. dec. Mike Ahearn (FL), 15-5; 130 – Sean Prell (Ww) maj. dec. Amado Bermudez (Wv), 12-0; 135 – Vinnie DeBenedetto (Wv) dec. Udti Thakur (Nk), 3-2; 140 – Luke Speno (FL) tech. fall Matt Doolittle (Mid), 22-6; 145 – John Coffey (PR) pin. Rob Schmitt (Pw), 2:41; 152 – Anthony Raimone (PR) dec. Frank Spano (Wv), 4-1; 160 – Harrison Cook (FL) pin. Sal Marchese (Nk), 1:14; 171 – Zeke stambovsky (Nk) tech. fall MIke Gioia (Wv0, 16-0; 189 – Jared Rosato (Mid) tech. fall Eric Thayer (Ell), 15-0; 215 – Patrice Castor (ER) dec. Chris Vealey (Ww), 6-4; 285 – James Shormis (Mid) dec. Eric Laporta (Yk), 2-1.

Congratulations also to Pearl River’s John Coffey (145) and East Ramapo’s Patrice Castor (215) and Djimitry Georges (119) for repeating as champions, and to Pearl River senior Anthony Raimone (152), who won his first O’Connell title.

Regarding the 125-pound final, I have now seen Joey Grippi twice this season and he has been a machine. The Super 16 125-pound final between Grippi and Mahopac’s Peter Caruso will be very interesting because these two wrestlers will also wrestle for the Section 1 Division I 125-pound title.

Now, what would make the 125-pound weight class interesting is Harrison’s Mark Arcara, who is certified at 119, but has been wrestling at either 125 of 130. Should Arcara have difficulty with 121 and opt to go 127, then a Caruso-Arcara or Grippi-Arcara or Grippi-Caruso semi would be outstanding.

In the 140-final, Speno was on a mission. If Speno wrestles in divisionals and sectionals like he did in the O’Connell final, he will not be touched. The question is, Will Speno stay at 140 or drop to his certified weight of 135?

Mid-Hudson and Bethlehem (Pa.) results

December
28

Mahopac coach Salvatore Imbimbo called me while I was covering the O’Connell tournament to let me know that Mahopac finished tied for 4th. Here are the notable individial results for Mahopac, Ossining and Yonkers:

Mahopac – Dominick Oddo won the 130-pound title and was named most outstanding senior wrestler. … Justis Flamio finished second at 112 pounds, while Peter Caruso (125) and Jake Srednicki (103) were both 3rd.

Ossining – James Brundage took the 160-pound title.

Yonkers – Chris Hernandez advanced to the 130-pound semis, but fell to Oddo. However, Hernandez wrestled back to take third.

Harrison’s Mark Arcara won the 125-pound title and White Plains’ Sam Weiner was the 171-pound champion at the Bethlehem Catholic tournament in Bethlehem, Pa.

I have to write my story now, but I will post the O’Connell results. Two results of notice: Joey Grippi handled Mike Ahearn of Yorktown, 15-4 in the 125-final and Luke Speno teched Middletown’s Matt Doolittle, 22-6, in the 140-final.

Wrestling mom video on Lohud website

December
28

When you have a minute, go to our website at www.lohud.com, click on videos and then click on sports videos. There you will find a video on wrestling mom Liz Zurla of North Rockland.

It’s an excellent piece as Mrs. Zurla discusses how much she loves wrestling. I think you will find it enjoyable.

Michael O’Connell tournament at Pearl River, Friday

December
28

The Michael O’Connell tournament will kick off at 10 a.m. with the finals scheduled for between 6-6:30 p.m.

This should be a two-team battle with Section 9 Warwick, coached by former Suffern standout John Canty, and Fox Lane vying for the team title. The remainder of the field includes Section 1 teams Clarkstown South, Nyack, Nanuet, Tappan Zee, East Ramapo, Hen Hud, Peekskill, Yorktown and Pawling. Section 9 is also represented by Ellenville, Middletown, Millbrook and Washingtonville.

The two weight classes that immediately come to mind for excellent finals are 125 and 145. The 125-pound final could feature Yorktown’s Mike Ahearn and Fox Lane’s Joey Grippi. The 145-pound weight class is stacked with Pearl River’s John Coffey, Warwick’s Mike Santalla and Fox Lane’s Luke Speno, if he weighs in at 145. If not, Speno will dominate the 140-pound weight class.

Looking forward to seeing Nyack’s trio of Zeke Stambovsky, Sal Marchese and Udit Thakur for the first time this season, as well as Clarkstown South’s dynamic duo of Dylan Sanzo and Corey Drummond and East Ramapo’s terrific tandem of Djimitry Georges and Patrice Castor.

Concerning the Mid-Hudson, I will contact Mahopac coach Salvatore Imbimbo and post them later, as well as Bethlehem (Pa.) results from Harrison coach Vincent Nicita.

Led by the Grippi brothers, Tommy, Peter and Joey, Fox Lane, without Luke Speno, overcomes a gritty Sleepy Hollow team. This sets up a matchup with Carmel. Both teams went undefeated last year.

Quarterfinal predictions

December
20

I am catching alot of flack from my friend, Fox Lane parent, concerning my lack of predictions. Guys, you have to remember, I have to stay on the coaches’ good side so I’ve been keeping the predicitons to a minimum.

Also, the first New Rochelle match I covered this season, New Rochelle coach Jim Guccione yelled at me (just like I called it) because I had him listed as pre-season No. 5. Guccione would have never known this had it not been for Fox Lane assistant and Gooch’s nephew, Anthony Rodrigues, who sold me out.

Now that I have been called on the carpet by Fox Lane parent, I have to defend my honor. Here we go:

No. 9 Ossininig at No. 1 John Jay: Ossining did a great job in beating Somers on Tuesday, but it will have its hands full with John Jay. Ossining is still without Clay Neivert, which hampers it, especially in this match. John Jay wins.

No. 21 Suffern at No. 13 New Rochelle: The seeds don’t do these teams justice. Port Chester coach Greg Domestico had every right to be upset when the draws came out and he had Suffern in the first round. The Mounties are off to an excellent start, led by senior Adam DeStefano and freshman Nicik Oliveto. The Huguenots are 4-0, behind Tom Antonioli, Marcos Carrasco, Blaze Jones, Greg Scott and Danny Zimon. This should be a great match, decided by a few points with New Rochelle prevailing. This will now give Gooch another reason to be mad at me.

No. 11 North Rockland at No. 3 Carmel: Even though the Red Raiders lost a talented class to graduation, they have responded to the challenge. Jerry Zurla, Jon Didio, Cristian Garcia and Joe Slane have carried North Rockland to a fast start. Carmel has lost to John Jay and New Rochelle, but don’t overlook the Rams, especially when they have one of Section 1’s finest in Mike Rose. This match could feature a Slane-Rose bout at 119. If Slane bumps up to 125, he will match up with Kevin Davidson, one of Carmel’s best wrestlers. The 171-pound match could be a good one with Didio facing Ryan Lyke, should Carmel coach Bill Twardy bnump Lyke up. Like Suffern-New Rochelle, another great match with North Rockland winning by a close margin.

Sleepy Hollow at No. 2 Fox Lane:Sleepy Hollow has established itself as an excellent team in its first Division I season. Sleepy Hollow knocked off Mahopac and Beacon. Now the Headless Horseman take on a solid Fox Lane team. Sleepy Hollow is excellent, but Fox Lane has a little too much in its arsenal. Fox Lane wins here.

Ok. There you have it. Now let the prognisticators have fun and rip me apart for my predictions. Thank you and enjoy the wrestling today.
