Why do many of you continue to beat this John Jay subject to death? I will say it again, it’s over and done with and I will continue to delete everything regarding the DiBetta situation.
Stop dwelling and rehashing the negative and focus on the positve – the state championships.
And to those of you who have a problem with my editorial attitude with this blog, you can all call me at 914-696-8234.

i feel bad if anybody has to call you, tony
Tony
I have been following this blog for two years and for the most part have enjoyed the discussions and opinions on both ends of the arguments that have arisen. I have disagreed with you and with many of your loyal bloggers on many occasions. I am a regular contributer who enjoys the anonymity privelige associated with blogging. I would not want to post my name next to some of the comments I make because although I am usually giving what I feel is constructive criticizism, most people do not want to hear it and I certainly don’t want to make enemies because of high school wrestling.
I have had many good ideas and have engaged in positive, and beneficial discussions on this forum on a regular basis.
BUT I’M DONE!!!!!!!
The way you have reacted with the Grippi incident and now with Dibetta makes me sick to my stomach. If you don’t like what somone writes, it gets deleted??? Or you want them to put their name next to it? What kind of crap is that? You know what, you can have your blog to yourself. I encourage others to do what I am about to.
I’m signing off forever.
Signing off forever –
I am sorry to hear that. I am also sorry to hear that you think it is okay to criticize a high school student-athlete for a mistake he made, and one that he will have to live with.
I guess you were never a kid and you never made any mistakes.
And yes, if you are going to criticize someone be a standup individual instead of hiding behind an alias.
Tony,
In my opinion you have allowed sufficient discussion on several controversial issues. you have not gone “delete” “delete”. Having rules is ok. But, when you deleted some of my posts and I emailed you, you never replyed. But, having said that, overall this has been a good forum except for some very recent posts that use foul language. hang in there and keep a thick skin. Tyler say’s hi.
Steve –
You’re right and I apologize for not getting back to you.
I just don’t agree with people ripping on a student-athlete. Yes, he made a mistake and I think it would be safe to say that he realizes what he did was over the line. He will have to live with this/
If you want to say what he did was wrong, that’s fine. He would agree with you. However, some of the posters have gone completely off the deep end with this, calling for him to be arrested or banned from playing lacrosse or calling him a bad kid.
I think I’ve been patient enough with this subject and Mr. Grippi.
Thanks for being a positive contributor Steve.
Tony what your doing is right and “Im signing off forever” you are overreacting. Tony has the right to delete comments that are disrespecting and taking shots at wrestlers. Also go ahead and leave the blog will be better with guys like you arent blogging on this site.
As long as the posts are not vulgar or use profanity why delete them. Blogging is “Free Speech”. A young man was unjustly harmed and people commented. If the young man mentioned in the posts took a page out of the Tony Pinciaro book he would apologize (like you did about the incident at the CYO game). That said, you do an outstanding job with this site and i look forward to future posts.
hey tony
i havent written in a while because i have not been so up to date with my wrestling information and dont want to post wrong information but from the posts and being in high school i believe that most of us can agree that all wrestlers are HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS… they make mistakes.. it was wrong timing and a bad judgement call but how many people havent made a bad judgement call at some point in their life??... people make mistakes and people learn from those mistakes and grow from them.. these are high school kids.. student.. minors.. give them a bit of slack.. things happen and with the amount of pressure some kids snap.. i know ive witnessed it.. it is a scary and unpredictable thing.. i think that the coaches before big events need to learn not to apply pressure as well as parents and other team mates.. the wrestler is putting enough pressure on himself.. or herself in some cases.. this is a topic that has been spoken about many times.. and tony you have every right.. its a blog people its not the end of the world.. these topics have been discussed beyond belief and are getting old.. its the same thing.. i think that he knows he messed up and he will learn greatly from the experience.. now i think that everyone needs to back off of tony and back off of the wrestlers and give everyone the respect and allow this wound that the wrestler suffered to heal.. going on this blog has to be more salt in the wound.. instead why not talk about the under dog in section 1.. or how amazing the matches were and how great so many wrestlers did.. and thats all i can say right now.. just seriously people give the kid a break and give tony a break
-Jess
Whatta great post to this blog, Jess. Ditto to everything you just said. You should get back in the habit of posting here! GO SECTION 1!!! GO GET’EM AT STATES!!!
Jess,
I hate that people say these are “kids” who make mistakes. When are they no longer kids? 3 months from now when they graduate? Their 18th birthday? you say their minors but a court of law would try most of them as adults. Once you understand and comprehend the difference between right and wrong you should be held accountable. This has nothing to do with what happend the past 2 weekends, but all i hear is that these are kids. There is a big difference between a freshman and a kid who will be living on his own is 4 months. I hate we live in a society where people say sorry but then give an explanation why they did something. If your truly sorry there is no explanation, you did wrong thats it shut it.
Tony..I was one of the people who wrote about the Dibetta kid. The information I recieved was incorrect. I read the apology from Dibetta and I feel it was sincere. The more I read about the situation from people who were at the match. The more it seems that the cut was caused by a move. I give the Dibetta kid a lot of credit for apologizingfor what he did do. I just wonder why the Lopez kid hasn’t stepped forward.
mayb he doesnt read these blogs?
they are still learning.. they are still in high school.. they are still kids.. does it excuse what happened? not at all.. but it happened.. can he change what he did? no.. does everyone on this blog talking about it make it any easier for him to put it behind him? no.. what he needs is support to move on and take this as a learning experience..
and no i dont believe that in 4 months he will no longer be a minor.. i believe that its the experiences in the 18 years of a person’s life and what that individual has gone through.. what mistakes they have made.. and everything that person considers before they take action on anything and how mature and “adult-like” the individual is.. i believe that those things defines the difference between a “kid” and an “adult”
i dont think in my previous post i should have used the word minor or kid.. but young adult.. during this time in their lives.. many many young adults test the waters to learn about themselves.. during this time an individual makes mistakes and learns so much and shapes who they will be in the future and it takes life experience to change from a young adult into an adult.. i feel like there shouldnt be an age limit on this.. some people may never learn and my personal view on that is not to be angry with them but instead to pity them because they never took the time to learn who they are and are still lost and need learn who they are…
some of these young adults are entering the real world soon and yes they will not have mommy and daddy to help them through it and if actions that happened at sections happened else where there could very well be legal actions taken but you need to see it as this.. its a learning experience that im sure this wrestler will never forget
many people have a life changing experience when their whole lives may change for the better or worse.. but many people dont need to have their experience posted about all over the internet.. im just trying to say i know that if anyone on this blog had made a mistake.. large or small.. they would be trying to move ahead and fix any bridges they may have burned and try to make right and people saying how much they had done wrong and constantly bringing up their mistake cannot help the process of trying to continue.. im sure the issue is being addressed by those closest and theres no need to people to discuss it any long..
tony i respect it if you delete this blog entry or the one previous because it mentioned some of the issues that occured at sectionals.. i just am speaking from a young adults point of view.. and trying to have people understand.. i think anyone who acted wrongly saturday knows it and is trying to make right but talking about it cannot help.. just try to move on and discuss the positives
This is a great topic for this blog because it has to do with really important issues that concern what’s good for section 1 wrestling. Tony’s blog is good for section 1 wrestling because it helps us all build a community, and we really need to do everything possible to promote that.
My own opinion is that wherever there are communities of people who engage in this type of exchange of ideas, especially around such an emotionally charged subject like wrestling, there will be events that are flashpoints which spark a rash of heated exchanges.
Sectionals is exactly that kind of event. It happened last year right after sectionals and the year before as well. Not surprising that it also happened this year. Some people will react from an emotional point of view but may not want to be personally accountable for what they say. Other people will speak on the record.
Tony is a reporter, and his job is to let the debate go on, at least for a bit until it gets so out of hand that it may create a potential problem for his newspaper. Don’t forget, the Journal News has a responsibility to pay attention to what is posted on its blogs. If some of you are irresponsible in what you say, Tony may have no choice but to remove your post.
Over time, in the marketplace of ideas the best ideas come to the top. Our kids were watching all of this, and some of them obviously took note. The worst thing to do on a blog is prevent the speech from happening. Tony has not prevented anyone from speaking. What he has asked you all to do is be accountable for your posts by identifying yourself, especially if you are being critical of someone else. Maybe you don’t want. Ok. You may blog anonymously but don’t expect us to take you seriously.
I believe the best thing to do is take individual responsiblity for what you post on this blog, and challenge others’ ideas in a responsible way. If some of you choose to blog anonymously and criticise others, and if you go too far, you will be exposed to criticism for doing that. It’s only fair. You should be able to take what you give. In the end, the community will decide who is worth listening to.
Diana
I can’t believe this happens in our country. This is a form of censorship. Let it go until it gets out of hand is just another way of saying, when “Tony” wants to delete it. I also think your missing the point. Granted, everyone has made mistakes. People keep coming on here and saying you can only criticize if you’ve never made a mistake or don’t throw stones if you live in a glass house. Well we’ve all made mistakes so do we never comment on any other wrong doings. None of the people that are subjects of this blog are being forced to read these blogs. Thats each Americans choice.
You know, when I first read ” signing off forevers” post I thought it was a bit extreme but now I’m considering it myself.
Can we take a second to congratulate Andrew Lenzi for winning the CHSAA championship by tf in the finals. I certainly consider him a section 1 kid and a force to be reckoned with.
Good luck at states
Lakeland dad, its not censorship. this would be like me walking into your house bad mouth you and your family and say its ok because of freedom of speach. Start your own webblog and allow anyone to say what ever they want. Till then your in tonys house.
Coach Warren
and you coach children?????????
WOW——— that’s scary!
lakeland dad
if you went to a section one wrestling event would expect noone to ask you to leave or tell you to leave, if you were screaming so everyone can hear you some of the things people have been saying on this blog.. it is the same thing
tony has every right to do as he pleases its his blog
Whats so scary? please explain. This is a privatly owned web site. The format he has set up is non intrusive, you never have to give a real name to post unlike other websites. If your unsatisfied start your own blog. Tony cant write anything he feals in the newspaper, it goes through his editor first. So why r u upset with him editing takedowns
Lakeland Dad
What are you talking about? Coach Warren is one of the few bloggers that ever makes any sense. Don’t attack him. He is one of the finest coaches and people that this section has to offer. He is fair and level headed. He can coach my kids anyday.
what r u talkin bout
Yea Ok——-and I’m sure you would want coach Warren to teach them english as well (privatly, feals and more).
This is NOT A PRIVATELY OWNED BLOG. He does NOT OWN IT. Tony DOES NOT pay to host it. He GETS PAID by the Journal News or Lo/Hud which actually makes his censorship even worse come to think of it.
Jess- apples and oranges. Screaming, yelling and disturbing other people at an event is not freedom of speach, it’s harrasment. This converastion is above you. Your cute and all but you should stay out of this one sweetheart.
Tony
They’re only words. You should not get so upset and emotional about them. Nobody is forced to read them. Just put the words from everyone up there and leave it to each of us to read and decide what we think is right and wrong. We don’t need you to do that for us.
Tony..How about a bloggers sectionals.. There seems to be some great matchups: Coach Warren vs Lakeland Dad, John Jay vs Beac, Wrestlers Dad vs jojo and you against signing off forever. However, we may not be able to reach signing off forever if he did sign off forever. Just a little humor to lighten things up a bit. Sectionals are over and what’s done is done. Lets get on with supporting the Sect 1 wrestlers going to the States.
Joe B
lol..you forgot Mr. Grippi vs Dibetta
No where did i say tony owned the site. it is owned by gannett news who tony works for. censorship would be if you had your own site and government took it down. As for my typing, it sucks i have 3 fingers throw me a freaking bone lol. Ps joe b i won the empire state games qualifier last year so im always ready for a match.
i think this blog should be taken off!!!!
lakeland dad:
your comments are absolutely ridiculous. Aside from the wrestling element, you are way to dramatic. You can’t believe this still happens in this country? What can’t you believe? That a news reporter has the common decency you wish you had to take a kid whose been attacked multiple times and save him from seeing it? Grow up, it isn’t the 60’s anymore, your not the only person with rights. You were definetly a hippy. Censorship this, censorship that, LBJ hit me with a baseball bat….just leave us alone, your ramblings are only making the situation worse. If tony took this site down do you feel that would violate your rights? Get out of here.
think of the other wrestlers that come on this site.. and unless you know me you dont know what is and is not above me.. i’m doing my senior year at college in high school and earlier in feburary i was in washington d.c. doing a mock congress so that way our laws can have an impact.. you need to learn your laws before you begin talking about censorship…
Jess
Hopefully they can teach you to spell February before you get your masters. Whos your teacher? Coach Warren?
You can rip on me all u want, but attacking a girl who is working on her college education? Are you nuts. heres what u do if u like to attack kids put the name of your son on here and watch what happens. I didnt mind a little banter but u crossed the line. now u are dead 2 me, unless u want that match lol
Lakeland Dad
Since you are such a stickler with typos, can you tell me what a converastion is?
seriously that was a simple typing error.. and its whatever thank you coach for defending me.. i have thick skin so i dont mind.. its the experience that make you who you are and changes you from a young adult to an adult.. im in that time where im making the transition.. its about people learning from their mistakes and i just believe that all of us in high school are trying to learn who they are and its just sad watching a bunch of people attack someone in the process of learning
Hey Tony,
Did you ever think your blog would provide a forum for a discussion of constitutional rights and an opportunity for a civics lesson?
Joe b—I’m offended you didn’t suggest I be invited to the blogfest. I want to spar with Frost Free. Or do I need a screen name to play? Oh dear. Would Defrost do?
Lakeland Dad—Coach Warren is so right. Look up the text of the First Amendment. You’ll learn something.
It’s simple, a moderator has the right to
run a blog in a way he sees fitting.
I’ve seen too many moderators who have
been absent from the job they are supposed
to be doing , and the
blog/chatroom/forum has deteriorated into
total garbage. I for one am glad that Tony
takes his job seriously.
Thank you Tony for trying to keep this Section 1
Wrestling blog a place where information and
ideas are prevalent over garbage and
hate.
Go Sec 1 !!

joey b
i want in also!! i may be tiny but i can take whoever!! well try to atleast

For emphasis – some of your comments above could be considered abusive.
Some of your comments that were deleted could be also be considered defamatory.
Furthermore, where you personally verified that which contradicted fact – had it been left on the blog and should someone have acted out improperly based upon belief in your false statements, it could have given rise to civil liability.
Tony has been way too patient with this BS
Lakeland dad
Someone needs to grow up, considering you are a father since your name is Lakeland dad, how about you pick on your own kids when they make spelling errors see how that makes them feel, I would hope you don’t, because by now I would think or at least hope that you have found out that it’s RUDE and DISRESPECTFUL. by now id hope your old enough and mature enough (maybe) to realize when your being a jerk, she was making an opinion based off of what she has heard and the situation at hand, then you go and bash her, the coaches, and then go on to criticize a spelling error? Grow up and do something more productive with your time please, this blog is supposed to be people talking about wrestling and their opinions and other people giving theirs. People don’t come on here to bash others and criticize their spelling errors. Its sad that you have to have TEENS and coaches reprimand you for being so rude. and btw, I didn’t proof read this to make sure I spelt everything right for your liking, because I could care less about what you think, do us all a favor and talk about the situations at hand and be MATURE about it, because the rest of us teens and coaches are.
LAKELAND DAD:
JUST STOP TALKING, COACH WARREN IS RIGHT AND YOU ARE WRONG!
Could someone please tell me what constitutes “All-State”? Do you need to place 1-4, or 6 or 8?? Thanks in advance.
1-6
Tony…I have a beter idear . Lets have a spelling bee sectinals. I’ll start with restlin. r um e um st um len….( WRONG ),,,,”Darne”
I would like to say one thing about lakeland dad. I do not think he is the father of a lakeland wrestler; rather, hiding under that name and bringing shame to the lakeland wrestling program. I am affiliated with the lakeland wrestling program, and I can assure you, none of the parents of the lakeland/panas wrestlers would EVER say anything close to what lakeland dad has written here. I ask that you not take anything he says seriously (he appears to be nothing short of a major trouble maker) and do not look badly upon the lakeland/panas wrestling team as this is no way reflects the wrestlers or their parents.
I agree that is enough with this junk
COULD YOU ALL PLEASE JUST SHUT UP!!!!!!!!!!!
IF YOU DO NOT HAVE SOMETHING TO STAY THAT CONCERNS HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING JUST BACK AWAY FROM THE KEYBOARD.
YOU PEOPLE JUST LIKE TO SEE YOURSELVES IN PRINT.
MS. FROST PLEASE PUT A SOCK ON IT.
I KNOW THIS IS ALL IN CAPS AND NO I AM NOT BIG JOE!!!
To JohnSmith:
Thanks for the all-state info. Our son only made to the sectional finals so we never had to think about anything “all-state”!!! And believe me, we were proud to see him get that far! All the best to our Section 1 state-bound wrestlers! 3 cheers for YOU!
now that sectionals is over.. there are many wrestlers that may never wrestle again.. i think we need to step back and reflect on the amazing years of wrestling these wrestlers have provided.. those who arent wrestling in college it was a pleasure watching you over the years.. thanks for putting your all on the mat
Back to wrestling, all state is top 6 at states, however if a kid who placed top 6 was from a private school then the 2 kids who lost in the round before placing would wrestle for public school 6th.
To Coach Waren: Thanks for the additional info re “all-state” qualification. ‘Learn something new everyday…Hate to be a nudge, but why do they differentiate btwn a private and public school when it gets to all-state level if they are competing as one big group until then? Does that question make any sense?
Sorry, I mean Warren.
Whoops, that’s supposed to be Warren.
The reason is that its the new york public high school championship. The representative at states from private schools is not a section champ, but the private school state champ. By allowing them into the state championship the tradeoff is the extra match. It happend to arcara last year. Ps as you can see in previous posts spelling isnt a strong point so dont worry about spelling my name
Thanks on both counts!
[Sock off]
Jess, you are right. There are a lot of Section 1 guys who will graduate this year and who had great seasons and high school careers. Some may not wrestle in college. Good luck to you all and thanks for providing a lot of excitement and great wrestling during your high school careers. For the guys who made All Section, its a great achievement. Congratulations to you all.
Observer—I’m not quite sure where exactly you wanted me to insert the sock, so I just put my two hands in it. OK?
[Sock on]
we know who wildcards are yet?
Coach Warren –
Good show by your kids this past weekend. You almost had me wet my pants with your typing comment!
Ms Frost,
The hands are a good first choice, that should slow down your typing and assist in the thought process.
I could suggest other places I would like you to put the sock, but this a family friendly blog….just kidding!!
One point of clarification:
the Private School champs are not entered in the NYS Tournament; the only two non-public school entries are the PSAL champ and the Catholic state champ. I know that is what Coach Warren meant but I’m not sure if everyone else understood.
Also, the PSAL and Catholic kids are NOT eligible for wild card entries and only their champions will go the state tournament.
As Coach Warren explained, IF a PSAL and/or a Catholic kid places top 6, then the two wrestlers who lost in the wrestle-back placing round will compete in an extra match. If there is just one kid in the top 6 (either PSAL or Catholic) then the winner takes the #6 spot. But if BOTH a PSAL and a Catholic kid both placed, then the winner of this extra match would actually take 5th and the loser 6th. Crazy, huh? And when this happens, they actually have two different award ceremonies back to back: the first, with the top 6 kids including any PSAL or Catholic; then the kids all step down, and they are reintroduced but this time with the other kid(s) who wrestled for that 5th/6th place spot.
The logic behind it is that the Catholic state tournament is a STATE tournament so just their champs are invited to compete in a NYS championship filled with just section champions. The PSAL is also its own separate body so they only get one entry from their City championship. There are actually many coaches who believe that since they are separate, that they should not even attend the NYS states anymore and that the public schools should use those two extra spots from them being removed to increase the wild card entries from 4 to 6.
Since my son attends Fordham Prep a Catholic High School I am well aware of the history of the Catholic league’s participation in the State Tournament.
1) The Catholic Section created a “State Tournament” only because they were asked to leave the Public Tourney after Lucas Magnani from St. Anthony’s won the state title in early 2000’s. Public school administrators and some coaches could not live up to the wrestling ideal that the best wrestler wins.
Also its not like the Catholic Section is putting up multiple champes each year. Typically we place behind section 1.
2) The Catholic section was invited back after a disatrous “Catholic State tournament” that drew only a handful of wrestlers too a gym on the other side of town in Syracuse while the Public tournament was going on. The Catholic section was then then asked back as “invited guests”
2) Catholic Wrestling gets lumped into the view of other sports like basketball who may “recruit” for their team. This rarely happens in wrestling as tuiton is NOT waived.
3) I have never heard a coach say that the City or Catholic Schools should NOT be part of the tournament. It is counter to the individual nature of the sport of wrestling. The best wrestler should be recognized in New York State regardless of what type of school they go to.
The reality is that the brackets don’t lie. A catholic wrestler will be recognized on their true placing as will all wrestlers.
In my view the ceremony lack credibility. When a public kid is on the podium instead of the rightful place winner its another example of “Catholic Charity”.
Chris
It is hard if you live in an area that may not have the best schools or maybe you just want your kid to get a Catholic education, so you opt to send you kid to a Catholic school . It is ridiculous to punish that kid who might be a great wrestler. Andrew is a great kid and a stud wrestler. It would be a shame for him to win every match at states and not be fully recognized as the one and only state champ. Good luck at states- see you there.
hey now, thanks for the correction. Does anyone know how a school like our lady of lourdes gets around this. Even jfk back when was section 1. They are a catholic school yet in public school leagues. I heard lourdes was trying to get a wrestling team.
Chris Lenzi:
I agree with you that the ceremony is a joke as it is run. The kids know who truly placed top 6 and for those who have placed “7th” and then move up for the second ceremony look embarassed to be a part of it.
I also believe Chaminade in the mid 80’s had a state champion at heavyweight but I can’t seem to recall his name.
I’m not sure what you are referring to regarding the creation of a Catholic state tournament as a result of Magnani’s performamce. Magnani won the states in 2000 at 112, winning 3-2 in the finals and in that same year, according to the information on-line at NYwrestling.com, the CHSAA results are listed as a “State Championship”, not a state qualifier as it listed in years prior to that year.( 1999 will not come up so I’m not sure about that year) It is for that very reason that some coaches (and although you may have never heard any I have) feel if it is going to be called a “State Championship” rather than a “qualifier” that that event should be the culmination of the CHSAA season and not the public school state championship. The way it is now, the CHSAA are now actually entering 2 different state championship tournaments. It may seem like semantics but there is a reason these events are called what they are. You are right when you use the term “invited” which is why they do not get consideration for wild cards as well.
In terms of the brackets not lying, you are 110% correct; if your son had been in the Section I tournament, I am certain he would have been in the finals against Oddo and it would have been another great match. The best will always emerge which is why I am also against the whole D-I and D-II creation because the best kids will emerge regardles of the size of school. The only reason I see a need for 2 classes is in terms of dual meet tournaments/championships where there can be a decided advantage when one school has 1200 from which to draw from versus another that may have only 400.
I think the CHSAA may make some noise this year. Besides your son, Chaminade has a few studs as does Monsignor Farrell. I think if all goes well for them the CHSAA could see a number of kids place this year.
Here are my questions.1. Why are private schools prohibited from the state tournament?(assuming they do not have a 5th year), Catholic schools are indeed private. Could a private wrestler claim unequal opportunity given their parents pay public taxes? 2. If you disagree with D1 and D2 would you also disagree with allowing catholic school wrestlers into the state tournament unless they participate in public school sections? (i think your suggesting this with the Oddo/Lenzi final remark)
Hey Now –
Your emphasis on “Name” of the event is semantics.
It may have been the older Magnani (Tom not Luke) which would be prior to 2000. But the fact is the CHSAA was always part of the NYS Public Tournament before the high Magnani placing. Ask Catholic AD’s and Chairperson Duglinsky from Chaminade, Mclaughlin from Fordham etc..
With that said, as you state – “the CHSAA results are listed as a “State Championshipâ€?, not a state qualifier as it listed in years prior to that year.”
The CHSAA Tournament was always a qualifier and when they were not allowed to participate anymore they were forced by necessity to have their own “Catholic State Tournament”. When they were permitted back in they kept the event name the same “Catholic State Tournament”.
Interestingly, those “semantics” are seem to be misleading the coaches you know. “Hey they have their own State tourney – why a 2nd”?
It was not the choice of the CHSAA to be excluded from the NYS Tournament in the first place. Bad enough that the status of the Catholic Section was originally changed, now coaches are thinking that the CHSAA shouldn’t participate in the NY Public Tournament because the Catholics have their own “State” tournament. I think folks are forgeting that the chicken came before the egg.
I know the CHSAA would gladly drop the name “State Tournament” if that got them on equal footing with other sections and be eligible for wildcards.
Hey Now – Many thanks for the good wishes at the State Tourney for CHSAA wrestlers.
Coach Warren – Kennedy wrestling way back was part of Section 1. It’s the decision of each section to determine whether they are allowed to join. On long island Section 8 would not let St. Anthony’s become part of the section. Again due to the misperception that Catholics schools can recruit or actually do so.
Makes you wonder How JFK could compete now if they did have a team. Dom Oddo, Chris Lenzi, my son would have went-3x all section, how many more???????????? What a shame to drop a sport that is relatively low cost.
Mr Lenzi,
”..again due to the misperception that Catholic schools can recruit or actually do so.” Please get your head out of the sand. I will agree that Fordham does not recruit for athletics esp wrestling, but many other Catholic schools recruit in other sports like football, basketball, baseball and softball around New York City and State.
It is just a fact of life, that is why private schools should not compete at the sectional level. Lourdes in girls bball and for a time Ursiline should not have been in section one,it is just not fair to the public schools that as a rule cannot and do not recruit players. On the contrary public school coaches have to watch as some of the best local in town kids get lured away to private schools. This is all private schools not just the Catholics.
I think the Federation championships and the present wrestling set up with the private schools is a fair compromise.
That said, good luck to Andrew, I will be routing for him in Rochester, at least when he is not wrestling Oddo.
Public schools often lose great athletes to Catholic schools and other private schools.
Observer & JJ –
Agreed with other sports regarding the recruiting. But CHSAA wrestling does not recruit for wrestling – its not exactly the hotbed of the sport – I think you would agree.
Good luck to everyone at States! Signing off.
Congratulations to ex-Port Chester and ex-Harrison resident John Giofree who now lives in Texas and will be wrestling in the Texas State 5A 285lb finals tonight at 7.30pm. Johns record this year is 45 and O and he has not been scored on all year! He also is an outstanding football player and will be attending Rice on a scholarship next year.
Good luck to him in tonights match.
Did anyone else read Lopez’s comments on the section one wrestling blog? I am surprised and disapointed that he did get punched after all (if this is really him,as much as I hate to question his identitiy, I’ve seen it done before)
John Gioffre hits a Granby roll in triple OT to win the Texas State wrestling title @ 285. He’s also one of the top lineman in Texas and signed with Rice University last Spring.
Here’s a link to his title match:
