  1. wrestler112

I just received more on the Section X Wrestlers

    Division 1
171 — Zeke Stambovsky (Nyack) vs. Rob Recore (Malone-10)

    Division 2
160 — Will Carter (Westlake) vs. Dale Cronk (Gouverneur-10)

  2. Tony Pinciaro

    Thanks wrestler112.

  3. wrestler112

    your welcome Tony

  4. shoebox

    thanks tony!
i hope realbuto beats that kid

  5. wrestler112

I got the Section 6 Division II Results

    Division 2
285 — Max Nau (Nanuet) vs. Art Garvey (East Aurora-6)

Now the only thing left now is the wild cards

  6. wrestler112

    Tony,
isn’t John Hobart (Fordham Prep-CHSAA) wrestling Robert Eskander (Webster Thomas) from Section V because in the bracket it says he’s wrestling Section V, not A1 wild card

    http://longislandwrestling.org/liwa/hs/announce/2008NYSPHSAADraws.pdf

  7. mmm

are any of the catholic school wrestlers good?

  8. Tony Pinciaro

    Wrestler112 –
Thanks for catching my error regarding Hobart.

I was never a good student. Just ask some of my former Harrison teachers.

In regards to Max Nau, saw Nanuet assistant coach Roger Banta this morning at the local bagel shop and he told me that Garvey is ranked No. 1 in Division II. Not a good first-round draw for Nau.

  9. Tony Pinciaro

    MMM –

Fordham Prep’s Andrew Lenzi is outstanding. He lost a decision (6-3 if I remember correctly) to Mahopac’s Dominick Oddo in the Eastern States 130-pound final.

Fordham Prep’s John Hobart has had an excellent season, despite weighing about 187 pounds and wrestling up at 215.

  10. wrestler

whats that coach talking about? dustin frederick is the #1 heavyweight in d2 and the whole state and is also nationally ranked. nau could place but frederick is without a doubt winning it

lenzi should place and is very good. i wouldnt focus so much on his match with oddo but with his matches with other state caliber kids such as piaquadio (Sec-9 allstate) benton (sec-2 3rd in state last year) and canale (sec4 champ last year and i think this year too. beat state champ devon brown last year in sectionals). its crazy that the kid is only a sophmore

  11. The Man

125: Derak Heyman (Tio) dec. Devon Brown (Mar), 3-1.

Hey Tony, since Brown lost in the finals yesterday, would they have to re-shuffle the 125lb weight class possibly affecting Joey Grippi’s draw?

  12. Tony Pinciaro

The question is will Devon Brown of Section 4 be in line for a wild card? If so, where does he get placed and how would this affect the draw?

We won’t know for sure until later this week when wild cards are announced and the brackets are finalized.

  13. Joe M

    Tony,

Devon Brown is a returning state champ. I’d have to believe he’s wild card #1 at 125.

  14. The Man

Tony thanks for the quick response, and yes Joe M I too believe that Brown would recieve the #1 wild card. With that in mind, I think that he would be in line to face his opponent from Section 4 Heyman. Under the rules two people from the same section cant face eachother until atleast the quarters.

  15. Joe M

    The Man –

Follow this link and click on “At-Large Bid Procedures”.

    http://longislandwrestling.org/liwa/highschool.htm

It tells how movement in the brackets will occur.

  16. Bob Jones

In D1, Realbuto and Justis both have #1 Ranked kid in state, FP 215 lber has #2 ranked kid(he beat the # 1 in sec finals so he is prob really 1) and Garcia has a highly ranked kid…not sure about the rest

  17. Joe M

I would imagine Flamio will be moved. Last year, Flamio placed 4th and Arujua placed 2nd.

  18. wrestler112

Realbuto is wrestling the 3rd ranked kid in the state

  19. joe b

Tony….Just a note. Fredonia Jr. wrestler beats top seed Ben Haas 11-6 to win Sect VI Div II (small school) 96 lb championship. The wrestlers name is Ms Carlene Sluberski. Is this the first girl to wrestle in the NYSPHSAA State Championships ?

  20. Hey Now!

As was stated in previous posts, we will not really know the exact match ups until the wild cards are determined and then placed in the brackets. Then the committee needs to make sure no 2 returning top 4 placers meet prior to the semi’s if it can be avoided and to make sure no 2 wrestlers from the same section meet in an opening round match. Joe M. has given the link which explains the process it further detail.

Another CHSAA kid who is tough is Hanafee from Monsignor Farrell at 112. Last year, he lost in OT to Ruggeriello in the finals of the Eastern States. Don’t underestimate him at all.

  21. Tony Pinciaro

    Joe B. –

No, Carlene Sluberski is not the first. Congrats to her.

Amy Whitback (sp.) of Section 2-Duansberg was a two-time Division II champion (2006, ‘07). If I remember correctly, Section 2 also had another female champ. I have to check with my friend Bill Palmer, who covers Section 2 wrestling for the Schnectady Gazette.

  22. The Veer

Sarah Anderson-2 (Schuylerville) was the other one.

  23. Tony Pinciaro

    The Veer –

I want your job man! Who has it better than you?

Thanks for being a positive contributor. Are you going to states to back Cuz’s son?

  26. Fox Lane Parent

I wish all section one wrestlers the best of luck. It’s a crazy tourney. Watch out for mid section wrastlers. they are all good. Work hard, do your best.

    Steve Lovas

  27. Just a Fan

    Tony-

Any Love for the kids states this weekend? 90+ kids from section 1 are going. If you look at past state winners and placers there are some impressive names.

  28. KDOG

Does anyone from fox lane have a legit shot at winning a state title? I believe this would be coach Amuso’s first state champion. I hope he gets one, he deserves it.

  29. wrestla

speno maybe, not too sure about him though

  30. The Veer

    Tony-

You don’t want my job Chief, less you wanna work full time and manage 1500 web pages on 5 sites and over 100k in visitors a month …in your spare time.

And yes, I will be at State. Somebody’s gotta be there for spectator control.

  31. bread and butter

mcormick is 2ed in the state, justis already beat nick arujua by a point last year in the constellation semi’s. i think both realbuto and flamio will beat them both.

  32. Just a Fan

    Flamio beat Arnel not Arujua

  33. Joe M

Arujua was a state finalist at 103 last year.

  34. qwertyuiop

Our wrestlers at states if they perform as they are capable
    Realbuto: top 6
    Justis: top 4
Arcara: stacked weight. good luck mark. hes very tough and when he’s on he’s good. mark will make it to the podium.
Oddo: Stacked weight, but in the semis oddo can win if his heads on right. Our best shot at a champion, oddo is tough on his feet and unrelenting. Will work for him in rochester.
Speno: has a head too, but he is very technical and knows how to hang with the big boys will mosty likely place top 6 with a weak weight.
160: brundage is impressive…but paris didn’t even make it to states. It’s a tough weight…and gets bourne in the quaters. too much. But he’s tough and ill say he make it to top 6
Zeke: if he chokes, he goes 2 and out. If he wrestles the way hes capable, he places top 5. if uve seen him when he turns it on youd agree.
Jake: not a loaded weightclass, and with alot of heart, jake might shock some people, being like a 2nd yeaar wrestler.

  35. JohnSmith

    Predictions:

96: Realbuto will at best get a 6th.
103: Rodriguez could place. He is a talent in the making
    112: Flamio maybe 4th…Stacked weight
119: Arcara is the real deal. But like 112, this weight class is insane
125: Grippi goes 2 and out
130: I don’t think Dom can handle the intensity that Dutton brings…Should battle back to take 3rd..
    135: 2 and out
    140: Might win a couple of matches…Outside shot at a 6th
    145: 1 and 2 for Tom….He has had a great career
    152: 2 and out
160: Should wrestle back to place 3rd or 4th. Bourne in the quarters = not so much fun
    171: 6th
    189: 1 and 2
    215: 2 and out
    275: does not place

Unfortunately, I don’t think we will do well this year. However, I do see a lot of promise with the lighter weights.
We have a solid 4-5 guys that should place 5-7 could place if they wrestle well. But hey, you never know…that’s why we wrestle…good luck to section 1..go get em fellas!

  36. Hey Now

    qwertyuiop:

I’m not sure where you are getting your information from regarding 140 as being “weak”. You’ve got 3 All-State kids returning in Amato (4th – IX) and Troy (4th XI) as well as Clemente (2nd II), as well as Floor (IX) who has beaten Amato 3X times this season, Collura (V) and Cervini (VIII). I don’t think I’d call that weak at all. Speno most likely will have either Amato or Troy first round which will be quite a tough match.

  37. p

Grippi will not go 2 and out grippi can place top 4

  38. spectator

grippi will surprise people. i dont think he’ll beat ligouri or brown but he could get up to top 3 (at best) in my opinion but id say top 6 4 him.
speno will have a tough but winnable 1st round match. he could beat either of them if he goes into the match right.
cook could place too. i know he has a match he should win in the first round so that will help and if he gets past it after that he should b good.

realbuto has a good shot but a very tough first match

rodriguez could, hes young and talented

flamio/rose top 6 (tough weight though)

arcara 1-6 (heard him and bonnano were like even when they faced each other)

oddo either 1st or 3rd depending on dutton match or maybe 1st or 2nd if they decide to scramble the brackets

coffey/antonioli- outside shot at 6th, coffey was close to placing in smalls last year

brunderage 3-6 (wont beat bourne but should place)

zeke has a good draw (unless they scramble the bracket) and should make it to the semis if he doesnt break. meys will be tough if they meet but hes capable of beating him on a good day. should place at least

genovisi could place but id say its an outside shot. his weight isnt to strong though and he has a lot of heart.

garcia/solis could do something. solis placed at eastern states and plus 275 is pretty weak this year.

small school could have a few placers as well

gottfried has a good shot back at 103. id say 4-6

osleeb is very good at 112 and has a good draw. id say 3-6

murayama could place 5-6 at 125. hes been here b4

manley has a good draw and should place if it stays the same 4 him. tough weight though with paddock, dake, kampnich and others. if draw is the same, 5-6

longo is one of my dark horses to place. the kid has tremendous heart and doesnt seem to gas at all (even when hes losing). outside shot of 5-6

rogener looks improved since the start of the season. impressive win at sectionals after losing to niazi earlier in the year. has a very winnable 1st round match. not too sure after that. outside shot of 5-6

rice is another dark horse to place. the kid is much improved since last year and looks good this year. almost beat dmato this year and from wat ive heard this kid works hard. maybe 4-6

where the heck did wang come from. ive seen this kid a few times and hes good. wasnt very impressive in sec finals but ive heard he has two bad knees and will have to get surgery after states. wouldve placed i think 5-6 but if those knees dont hold up then i say he wins his 1st match and thats it. will do a lot in the next 2 years

heard nau works very hard. looks pretty good and plus he has a weak weight at 275. could place 3-6.

  39. Old Skool

I think some people here are way too optimistic…Most people here are predicting first time sec 1 champs to place like it is easy. Don’t underestimate the awe factor up there. Only lock to place is Oddo, followed by prob Arcara, Flamio low placing. Experience is key up there. May be some deers in headlights…

  40. Leit143

12 and 25 are insanely difficult weights. I agree with old skool. Those two weights are really stacked with talent and depth. Flamio will fight to the death. Most of those guys at 112 have him in the skill department, but he can win BIG matches with his desire and will. As for Grippi, his rivals are very experienced, and very skilled. WE shall see. 119 is also a very deep weight with lots of talent and class. Arcara can wrestle with any of those guys. His big obstacle: how good is energy levels are in regards to his weight cut.

  41. FAN

Osleeb will see Tyler Marlow (state champ @ 103)in 2nd rd.He will get the A1

Murayama will se Morabito in 2nd round.Don’t see him getting past him.Other good wrestlers in that weight class
    hasbrock,valez,kampnich,sleeman.

  42. JUST ME

DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY PREDICTIONS ABOUT WHO MIGHT PLACE A STATES THIS YEAR FROM SECTION 1?

  43. rocks

oddo, flamio, arcara, brundage and stambovsky all place if they perform as they should.
the rest are hit and miss.

  44. sectfan

Grippi will do well but no easy road his first match is a very tough match he will have his hands full I think he losses that match.

  45. Big Fan

Not only will weight be a factor with weigh-ins on Sunday too, but wrestlers will have to deal with the time change and lose an hour overnite. So semi’s will feel like 8:30am. Poor planning.

  46. baller

Does anyone know anything about the kid Sean Paul is wrestling named Costa? Anythuing would be aprreciated

  47. SECTION1FAN

HOW ABOUT SPENO HOW WILL HE DO?

  48. rocks

Gemalas is the section 11 county champion at 171. Suffolk is not generally known for d2 strength. He is a decent wrestler but will not place. Sean has a good shot

  49. animal

    SEAN PAUL gonna do work..

    Tony what do you think

  50. cookiemonster101

wen do we get official brackets?

  51. baller

Thanks alot guys, I hope Sean can place this year, he has an inredible work ethic and I hope he can pull it off

  52. WrestlingGENIUS

    Rocks,
Once again you prove how stupid you really are. Clearly, you have not read up on Matt Fernandez. Fernandez had beaten Oddo earlier this season, so i predict Fernandez will take it home. Hit or miss is bologna. Fernandez is winning the state guarenteed. Rocks, why don’t you post your real name and be a man. How dare you overlook the greatness of Matt Fernandez. Keep in mind he did get certified this year, which gave him a high seed for the state tournament.

  53. Tony Pinciaro

    WrestlingGENIUS –

I am just curious to know who this Matt Fernandez is? As I comb the 125 through 140-pound weight classes in Division I and Division II, I don’t see a Matt Fernandez listed.

  54. rocks

    wrestling genuis,
I hope that whole thing was a joke. Matt Fernandez probably doesnt exist. And he didn’t beat oddo, your wasting your time and you.
And, you brainless moron, THE STATE TOURNAMENT IS NOT SEEDED, IT IS A RANDOM PICK!
I suggest you learn your stuff, because you know nothing.

  55. rocks

MATT FERNANDEZ DOESNT EXIST! AND SECTION 7 HAS NO LARGE SCHOOLS! YOU LOSE.

  56. wrestler

who the hell is matt fernandez. do u mean michael hernandez from sec11 ? is this just a joke

  57. WrestlingGENIUS

How could you say such a thing? This is an insult. Matt Fernandez is one of the most amazing wrestlers i have ever seen and for you to ask if this is a joke is despicable and i will not stand for such a thing. Wrestler-You my friend may be more ignorant than my buddy rocks. How can you challenge the greatness of Fernandez and call him a joke? You disgust me.
