Wild cards will be announced this week

February
24

I asked Section 1 wrestling chairman Eric Romanino at sectionals when the wild cards would be announced. He told me it would be this week, and, if I remember correctly, he said it would be Friday, Feb. 29.

In regards to wild cards, I would think Yortown’s Mike Ahearn and Clarkstown North’s Steven Ramos have a good shot. Both are former sectional champs and runners-up. I think East Ramapo’s Djimitry Georges might stand a shot. He is a sectional champ, runner-up and fourth-place finisher. And, Carmel’s Mike Rose, a two-time sectional finalist belongs in this group.

Pearl River’s John Coffey is worthy of a wild card, but I’m not sure how the state will view him. Coffey was a sectional champ and sectional finalist in Division, and this year was a sectional finalist.

Coaches, please let me know what you think because you have a better understanding of the wild-card rule than I do, especially in regard to John Coffey.

    thanks tony!

Tony, ramos and ahearns chances were hurt with mike damato and devin brown both losing in the section finals. Georges, coffey, and solis look like good shots. We may know as soon as wed. The lack of dual meet tournaments compared to upstate hurts our kids when it comes to number of wins. We also have no bonus pts so a 3rd in section 5 or 11 is the same as 1st in section 1

I also believe it is supposed to be announced Wednesday mid day…Yeah Calero also has a shot..he has a 2nd and 3rd…but at 215 alot of placers from other section last year moved up to 285 and won their sections and the two state ranked 215lbers jumped up to 285 and won their sections which opens up more possible wild cards because kids taht would have taken 2nd in their section now win….Also I agree that Solis has a chance also a 2nd and 3rd and alot of 285ers around the state last year were seniors

    wat about pc’s 215 calero??

@ 119, Georges is a longshot for the 4th spot and the most vulnerable of the former Section Champs. The wrestlers listed below all have more points than him.

    Lanave-4
    Marianetti-5
    Bonn-3

He’s also hurt by a low win/loss point differential.

@ 112, the top two spots will go to Secttion 11 kids. That leaves two spots open for Rose. He might make it.

@ 125, I think Ahearn will get in with the third or possibly the second spot. Brown-4 will get the top spot with Bloss-9 and Ahearn fighting it out for #2 and 3. State ranked Troy-11 comes in behind both Bloss-9 and Ahearn and could be the A4.

@ 140, the fisrt two spots will go to D’amato-9 and the other Troy-11. Ramos looks good to grab one of the last two.

@ 145, Coffey looks to be the safest bet of all the kids with sectional titles on their resumes for a berth. Could even be as high as A2.

  6. The Veer

@ 125, move the battle between Bloss and Ahearn to the 3rd/4th spot. Riggi-2 (Scotia-Glenville) will most likely get the A2.

  7. Wild cards

Sec 1 could get as many as 9 wildcards in large school. I thought that was high but looking at other sec results i could be right. Rose, georges, ahearn, tompkins, ramos, coffey, weiner, calero, and solis all could get in. Burrows would have gotten in too if he didnt miss most of the season

The section prestige points(points based on section past state tourny production) will hurt us but that fact that we are not as deep can help us. Yes we do not wrestle as much as upstate(a lot of Dual Tourn.) but our good kids often beat up on their in section opp. which leads them to having good record/win%. In addition as you look around the states..besides the real studs many schools have programs where it is hard to make the varsity line up and most don’t until their Jr or Sr. and therefore don’t place in sectionals multiple times. Where as here in Section 1 it is more common than other sections for a kid to place multiple years which garners them more placing points. This is what helped us last year with at large bids..especially in D2

  9. states

how would you figure weiner tompkins and georges getting them?

  10. The Veer

Last year, a 2nd and a third wasn’t enough to get the card. This year, it looks like that might be good enough in certain weights.

In any other year, Georges would be in good shape with a Section title, a 2nd and a fourth. But this year, 119 is by far the most competitive weight class at State.

The current field is stacked with returning All-State wrestlers and Section Champs. You’d think that would cover most of the All-State wrestlers, but this year, @ 119 it doesn’t. It looks like the top three wildcards will be State placefinishers.

It’ll be close for Georges. Ten points may make the difference either way.

Looks like Weiner and Tompkins have a shot at A3 or A4.

Oliveto might also have an outside chance with a 2nd and a 5th. Sometimes there aren’t a lot of returning placefinishers @ 96.

Before Saturday’s Statewide results came in, I didn’t think this many Section 1 kids would have a chance. But after seeing the results, 7, 8 or 9 wildcards is a possibility.

  11. rj

    Veer,
    5th doesn’t count for points. Only 1—4

  12. wildcard

word on the street is olivieto got 3rd wild card and pete grippi tied with another kid with points for fourth wild card and the people are redoing it today

  13. The Veer

    rj-

My bad. You’re right, only 1-4 counts.

  14. gout

alot of other sections already know there wild cards why not us???

  15. The Veer

Section 3 had them posted earlier in the day and then pulled them from the website because they wre only “preliminary.”

There were already changes made to the posted bids and more were coming.
