All Section in wrestling does not mean a pile of beans. What happened at Pace on the mat is the only thing that matters. As for small school, HOW many of these kids would have placed top 4 under the old system, not many, what a joke this has become.

A simple solution just hit me. Lets ask the people it affects and take the decision away from adults who think they know what is best for the kids.

At the section 1 dinner, have an annomymus survey for all the boys that are there. Ask them to provide what place they finished and if they think the number of all section spots should be changed and if so to how many.

You can then seperate the results based on what the 1st place finisher, the 2nd place finisher etc... think about the current process. You couldn't get a better group to survey. You'll have almost every boy affected give his opinion.

I think you'll see that if you take the adults out of the discussion the boys (including the winners) are fine with 6.

I don't believe any good comes from cutting the number of all section from six. The accomplishments of the winners should be satisfaction enough for them. Everyone knows who they are. The get to move on to the state tournament with the admiration and respect from all the wrestlers and fans in section 1.
In many cases there is not much difference between the second through sixth place finishers. A good draw can get a wrestler through without facing some of the best wrestlers in his class and a bad draw can drop you into the losers bracket forcing the wrestler to win 5 matches and he still may finish below a wrestler he is better than.

Leave it alone. Your not hurting anyone and your not helping anyone by changing it.

I like MJ's idea. Make it top 3 D1 and the small school champs, plus 2 wildcards and 3 honorable mentions. Make 4th and 5th place D1 and the small school runner-ups automatically HM, with the possibility of being picked as all section. There's no reason that Trumm, for instance, shouldn't be all-section this year. That system would get it back to the old days of only 6 all-section, when getting it was a real achievement, but it would leave HM in place which is still something to strive for.

I still say we should just hold small school sectionals the week of the divisional tournaments and have a unified sectional championship. Is there any rule that says we can't do that and still send wrestlers to the two different state tournaments? For example, say Berkowitz last year won the combined sectionals and the runner-up was a large school champ, send the runner-up to D1 states. Or if that would cause problems, have the runner-up and the 3rd place kid (if they had been on opposite sides of the bracket) have a wrestle-off a few days later (don't give me stuff about making weight, any kid that would have serious trouble staying at their wrestling weight for an extra few days shouldn't be at that weight anyway).

There are 36 d1 schools and 12 d2 schools, shouldnt d1 get 3x as many all section kids? 5 for large 2 for small seems fair, 105 kids all sec. The only problem is boces wants that cut to 60 kids next year for the entire section.

I agree there is a balance to be struck. The need to encourage those participating without diluting the accomplishments of others. Many would agree with the philosophy that failure to make all section should be a motivating factor. With this in mind I would suggest top 3 in small school with Honorable mention for 4-5. Top 5 for large school with HM for 6th. This makes matchs for 3rd/4th in small and 5th/6th in large meaningfull(ie winning gets you all section). It also makes all section top 20%.

honestly i think they should leave allsection the way it is. leaving it will encourage the kids to stick with wrestling and maybe get more wrestlers to come after seeing others suceed. everything needs to be done to kee interest in wrestling, esecially with those small school kids who quit more than anyone. lets just kee on heling wrestling so more guys come out for it and maybe even a few schools get their teams back.

if they have to cut down on allsection though id say they should make it to 4 big school and to 2 small school with a few wildcards. to 4 is how they do it in most areas of the state

Just combined the large and small school's for the All-Section award's. No need to separate. Pick the top 6 based on overall performance in sectionals, regular season, Head to head if needed. So if a kid is 30-0 during the season and get's hurt right before the divisionals does he make All-Section? He should right? A kid who places from 4th thru 6th should not be guaranteed a All-Section spot.

Section 1 has 50 schools and 9 kids all section. Section 9 has 25 schools and 6 kids all section. The large school small school split did water down all section, but i dont think we even do all county any more. There is more depth in our section now than 10 or more years ago. However next year they will cut down all section, possibly top 3 large and sec champ for small.

If you think the inflation is bad in wrestling, let me tell you that in lacrosse, the TOP TOP team gets about 95 percent of the all section nominees, so if there is a total of 70 lacrosse all section picks, the BIG TIME school get 65-67 picks and small schools get 3-5 picks at the most, and that is with small school coaches arguing, fighting for this players to be recognized.

Top 6 and Top 3? Shouldn't the designation All-Section have more meaning than that? While placing is a notable accomplishment, does that mean that someone is worthy of all-section. Why not in the future limit it to the top two in each weight class and have the third and fourth place finisher be honorable mention. This over-award issue is not just true in wrestling but in other sports in Section 1 as well. The award loses its meaning. In the old days there was all-county, and the top one (or two in some cases) at each position in the county would get the designation, and another group would be named honorable mention. It was an honor to be all-county or all-county honorable mention and it should be an honor to be All-section or all-section honorable mention. But 135 All-section wrestlers (90 D1 and 45 D2)? Talk about inflation!
