Coffey, Ramos, Weiner and Kyreakedes earn wild cards

February
28

It’s official as Section 1 earned four wild card berths with Pearl River’s John Coffey, Clarkstown North’s Steven Ramos and White Plains’ Sam Weiner gaining Division I wild cards, and Dobbs Ferry’s Teddy Kyreakedes being the only Division II wrestler to gain a wild card.

wow thats all we earned dang we are not respected as a section we need to build ourselves to become one of the stronger sections in N.Y. state

  2. old JJ

its not a matter of being respected its a point system. and some upsets around the state didn’t help kids like ahearn and rose

  3. kingpin21

anyone have a link for the full wildcards from each section

  4. RICKP

is coffey going to have antionoli first round?if not then who will he have? and how bout ramos

  5. wrestler152

I dont quite get the wild cards, how does one section get more than the others?

  6. WrestlingGENIUS

Well wrestler152, it works like this. Since section 1 is so bad compared to others such as section 5, we will not have as many wild cards because our wrestlers do not have as many points as the section 5 wrestlers. It’s by weight class, not section. Look out for Matt Fernandez in states. I think he might take it home.

  7. crashnburn

coffey slides to the A2 slot and faces psal champ….ramos also faces psal in 1st round.

  8. Big Fan

We have to start supporting ALL our wrestlers and encourage them to do their best at states instead of saying they will choke, etc…..Then Section One can start to earn respect and more points in the future for all of our wrestlers in our section to earn wildcard spots. It doesn’t just stop at sectionals, this is what you’ve worked for. If all of section One can think ahead to states instead of just placing in sectionals, everyone’s mentality will change too. Most kids are just pysched to make it to states like its a field trip or something. Our section needs to stop thinking like this.

  9. Observer 3

It was interesting to look around the state. There were some statistical enigma’s. For example 112 D2. The top three wild cards are made up of last years state champ,3rd place and 4th place runner up at 103. For all them to loose in their section final unlikely “by chance” occurance. Nevertheless it makes that weight class very deap.

    Observer 3,

Are you implying these former state placefinishers lost their sectional matches intentionally?

  11. Joe M

A link to a great story:

  12. Observer 3

    Joe M
I think its is an trend that statistically seems less likely. Nevertheless, knowing the mind set of most atheletes involved, I would doubt such a thing(loosing intentionally) would occur. My main point was the depth of this class based on this unlikely occurrance.

  13. Rams Coach

The wild card participants is not based on respect, voting, or any other subjective data. It is based purely on 3 factors:
    (1) Win-loss diferential = Subtract total losses from your total wins with a cap 45 points.
    (2) Post-Season points = Add up the points awarded for a top 4 Section place finish and/or top 6 at the states in every year a wrestler placed.
    (3) Power Points = This is where we are hurt. They use data to award bonus points for how a section has done over the last 6 years. Since Section I has done so poorly, we get 0; the top 4 sections get to add 10 points for each kid and the middle 4 sections get 5 points to add.

Take all those numbers, add them up, and the top 4 kids per weight in the state earn the 4 wild cards.

    Big Fan,

Who is thinking that it stops at sectionals. Not the kids who have been busting their asses at the practices for the past two weeks. You dont know what you are talking about.
Most of the kids who won the section think they can go to states and do something. Not that they are taking a field trip. If they go up there win one match or two matches or even place who the hell are you to say anything about it.

  15. shoebox

im so happy coffey got it!

  16. Cauli

Expectations and aspirations help define a wrestling community. A roommate of mine from college (Section VIII) gave me new perspective when he put it this way:

“We all strived to be Section Champions to see how high we could place at States. Once you were a Section Champ, you were measured by your place in Syracuse, not by the fact you went.”

The inference was that if you didn’t place at States, you were in some way an unworthy Nassau County champion. He was a 2x NCAA D1 qualifier and always felt bad about his 4th place finish in Syracuse.

We still have a ways to go before we start measuring our Section Champs in that fashion.

    Joe M. –
An incredibly inspirational story – thanks for posting that link. I’d be screaming, too!

  18. Hey Now

Regarding Joe M’s posting for the story link above-

Go to Flowrestling.com and you can see some videos of him competing and working out in a private gym. To see someone compete successfully without fully formed arms and legs is unbelievable.

Take the time to check this webite out. Flowrestling.com, which is a free site, also has links to high quality videos of the best high school, college, and international wrestling events in the world, as well as interviews, and video tours of some of the best facilities in the country, like Blair, St. Paris, Cornell, Premiere, etc.

  19. Joe M

Couldn’t agree more with Hey Now about flowrestling.com. What a great site.

  20. Michael Berl

    Wrestling. ahhhhh.

  21. Michael Berl

Ben Weinstein is an up and coming wrestler at 40. look out for him at states next year. R.I.P. the cp’s.

  22. wrestling's not for wimps

In anyone’s opinion, who would be the biggest threat to John Swertfager(189) at states? I’d love to see him take 1st!!! Of course, I’d love to see all of our amazing Section 1 wrestlers take first.

  23. Coach Antonio

    Wrestling’s not for wimps.
Shut up and be a man.

  24. SiKher

swertfager got pinned by a kid whose not even going. i think the older meys is ALSO at the weight. He pinned his way through the tourney last year.

  25. wrestling's not for wimps

    Coach Antonio –

A rather rude response coming from a coach…and it’d be hard to “shup up and be a man” since I’m a woman!

Sikher – Thanks for your courteous and informative response and for reminding me about Meys in the 189lb weight class. I know there are probably others equally as tough as him.

  26. gryphon

    wrestling’s not for wimps,

Swertfager wrestles in the quarters (assuming he tops Newman in the first round)the winner of Josh Peters, section 4 (3rd ranked in the state and 5th last year 189) and Jake Newcomb, section 2 (8th ranked in the state and 4th last year 171).

The winner of that quarterfinal probably would meet in the semis (probably Adams) the winner of Adams, (4th rated in the state and 4th last year @ 225) vs Myhrberg, who is ranked 6th in the state…quite a good quarterfinal!!

  27. wrestling's not for wimps

    Gryphon –
Thanks for your 189lb info…’certainly will be a good quarter final. I’ve seen your other posts and you are certainly in-the-know! We went to see all the action at Albany last year and wish we could be up at Rochester to do the same this year. Get it done, Section 1!!!
