what’s PSAL stand for?
Shoebox –
Public School Athletic League.
does that mean the schools in new york city?
Shoebox –
Yes. The Public School Athletic League consist of the New York City Schools.
thanks Tony- will you be going to states?
tuff draw for grippi first round
GENTA MURAYAMA!!!!!!!!!!
hearts for GENTA MURAYAMA!!!!
i had jakub pawloswki at chertow winter camp and he was the best heavyweihgt there..thats the kid brundage is facing
grippi has a 2x state champ!ouch
enough about this kid pawloswki. GENTA is the real star. HOORAY! Genta, will, you marry me?
he probably likes his name
Section 5 website has all the names and brackets of each weight class…....does this follow the format of the top seed at the top of the bracket, second seed at the bottom of the bracket, third seed in the second seeds bracket and fourth seed in the top seeds bracket? It does not seem to follow this format in its presentl form …...clarification please?
it a random draw no one is seeded.
yo why dose it seem like all section 1 the wild cards have way easier first round matches than the section 1 champs?tony can u explain
The state tournament is a random draw with a few exceptions. If more than 1 wrestler in a weight class took 4th or better last year they are seperated. Flamio was supposed to face the 103 st runner up 1st rd but because they were both top 4 last year they are seperated. So to answer your question, the draws are pure luck.
Coach Warren & Wrestling fan…..thanks for the clarification….
Wow, tough draw for Grippi, maybe he will be able to wrestle his way back, although it will be very tough. And hey, if we can get Antonioli and Coffey past their first match, then they will face in the quarters, which means one is guaranteed all state when they win that match. I could see as many as 5 guys placing, and I think Arcara, Oddo may be able to take it home. Hopefully no one runs into Matt Fernandez, because if they do it is over. Stambovsky and Weiner both have shots to, I am liking Section one’s odds this year.
antoniolli and coffey would have 2 win their 1st two matches in order to face each other which would be in the semis. luckily both have first matches that they should win, antoniolli against a kid he has already beaten and coffey against a psal kid. they both have tough matches after that i think but nothing is impossible.
how do u think udit thakur will do?
Pinball…....do you mean Mike Hernandez @ 160 from Brentwood? If so, tell me about this guy….....don’t know him….
Evidently, this Matt Fernandez figure is the manifestation of a young man’s creative mind, the representation of an ideal wreslter.
Pinball & WrestlingGenius….....Unless Matt Fernandez is in D2, I do not see him anywhere in D1 in any weight according to 2008 NYSPHSAA Wrestling Championship brackets…TRUTH…..you may be onto something!
Truth and Gryphon, obviously he does not go anywhere from 112 to 189, I think genius was joking. I believe he is going from 25 to 40, because last year he placed at 25. I don’t think this will effect anyone, as he is not in Oddo’s bracket, I think oddo might take it home, after all its his 4th time being here. I hope he does, we need a section one champ, its been a while. I think Arcara has a shot too, although there are some tough kids, like lanave from chenango forks. I think Matt Fernandez takes home the crown this year. He is in great shape, and rarely throws up. He will be repping NY, as he has done all the way since his certification, which happened. He passed that test. Yup. But anyway, good luck to everyone, hope they don’t run into anyone like Fernandez. Good luck to all.
Maybe Fernandez is not going 189 for states but i heard he went in one of the higher weights for one of his matches this year. Truth you should probably change your name to false info.
Wrestling Genius/Tony Riga –
Enough with the fictitious Matt Fernandez. Let’s focus on Section 1 wrestlers.
Best 1st round match-up is…....??
Popolizio vs Howard @ 103
Popolizio vs Marianetti @ 119
Heyman vs Bloss @ 125
Oddo vs Terenzi @ 130
Stella vs Strumwadder @ 135
Bohn vs Lewandowski @ 135
Collura vs Floor @ 140
Reeb vs Elvin @ 145
Letcher vs Greisheimeimer @ 145
Majerus vs Capone @ 152
Hansen vs Giordino @ 171
Adams vs Meyhrberg @ 189
Peters vs Newcomb @ 189
Huge Weekend is coming!! Would love to hear your thoughts!
Gryphon –
I’m going through withdrawals. I hate this 3-week layoff.
I’m looking forward to a Dominick Oddo-Andrew Lenzi quarter as well as a third match between Zeke Stambovsky-Sam Weiner, and a possible semi between John Coffey-Tom Antonioli.
Withdrawals are an understatement! Lots of Section 1 wrestling ahead of us, however lots of good first round wrestling outside of Section 1 as well.
Tony
Do you think Antonioli once he gets past Gaynor can beat Mick Letcher from Section 3? Last I looked Letcher was second rated in the state and came in 4th last year at 140.
Gryphon –
Any time you face a returning state placefinisher it is going to be a difficult match. Tom will have to avoid mistakes against Letcher.
Even a small mistake at the state championships can be lethal.
Agree 100%.......speaking of mistakes, #10 rated Conan Ingham @ 189 CAN NOT afford any against his first round opponent! The semi’s of this one should be good with Mays vs #5 rated Christian Boley.
Does Matt Fernandez wrestle Loudon Swaine in the first or second round?
Schup –
You have to love the “Vision Quest” reference. In fact, the movie was on FUSE Sunday.
Schup,
I believe that Fernandez is wrestling Swaine in the semis when he gets that far.
tony watch out for a kid named brain guilfoyle, he wrestles at 130 hes only a 10th grader but hes won many national tittles when he was kid,hes from sectoin 4,it could be a good match to oddo if he win
Gryphon – Some others that are outstanding first round matches:
112: Arajau vs Hanafee
119: Shepard vs Lanave (119 is such a strong weight – amazing quarters as well)
125: Brown vs Cubillos
125: Borschoff vs Riggi
130: Piaquadio vs Benton
Possible 119 Quarters:
Arcara vs Shepard/Lanave
Bonnano vs Popolizio/Marianetti
Gomez vs Peet/Bagne (Don’t know much about these 2)
Ruggirello vs Ellis/Bohn
Looks like a great tournament…too bad it’s not in Albany!
Joe M
Hanafee is a sleeper! Too bad he’s up against the 3rd rated kid in the state. Don’t see Winky losing to Lanave….the Winkster is third rated in the State. Don’t know about Cubillos but do know Brown….hes the man! Arcara vs Winky…..that’s a match! Benton has the goods…...9th ranked in the State and took 3rd last year @ 119!
119…what a bunch of studs throughout! Wish the Tourney was in Long Island!
Clocks go forward for daylight time this weekend, so the wrestler’s lose an hour of rest Saturday night. Don’t miss weigh ins on Sunday!
i wanna see meys wrestle zeke. i heard they had an exciting match earlier this year.
when could that happen is he on meys side
Siker
The match of the Titans could be Quarterfinal @ 171….#3 ranked Malvestuto vs #1 ranked Meys! The winner of that match (in a perfect world) will wrestle the winner of Zeke and Weiner…What a SEMI!
By the way…...who won between Zeke and Meys….score…summary?
zeke lost 2 hunter 4-2. zeke is tough. austin wont b ez though. with his draw though, i can certainly c zeke in the semis
That’s impressive… Hunter is one of the best wrestlers in the state, out of any weight class.
nope hunter has the most wins in the country most pins also seke can not beat him im sorry i would like to see it but i don’t think so guys
you guys are so stupid. if you knew Zeke wrestled hunter meys ealier thius year and lost 4-2 #1 hunter had a really bad fever and still wrestled. #2 he is 189 zeke is 171. he is now wrestling austin meys who is not as good as his brother so zeke has a shot.
The Div I & II State brackets can be downloaded from this link:
http://www.nysphsaa.org/championships/winter/
austin meys is a former state champ at 103 thats the kid who beat zurla in the state finals a couple years back…he is very tough but we’ll see what zeke can do against him
zeke is probably one of the most underrated wrestler in recent section I history. I’ve watched him at state practices and I can tell you he’s as good as anyone in the room and if meys does have a threat at states, it is likely from zeke, who has hopefully realized by now that even if your name is ‘meys’ you can be beaten!!!
Is there a chance of Zeke wrestling hunter at the states? If so good luck Zeke your gona need it!
gamelthorpe,
Well said! Who’s to say that Meys beats Malvestuto, who is 3rd ranked in the state and placed 4th last year
171.....Meys was 5th140 last year….big jump!Saw Zeke at the sectionals and until the finals was demolishing his competition…..lets see Zeke vs Voorhis in the finals! If not “Z” then Weiner….Go Section 1.
Wrestler
Hunter is 189 NOT 171
If zeke wins that match he’s basically our best shot at a champ. Idk tho austin might be better then hunter. g’luck zekester
SiKher-
Zeke might not be our best shot…......if Oddo beats Terenzi, we have quite a match between the 4th and 5th ranked kids in the state( Oddo vs Lenzi).....winner there faces (in all probability) Stephen Dutton from section 11..3rd ranked in state and took 2nd last year @ 119….that’s the match to watch…btw…Dutton and Lenzi are 10th grade…incredible!
How two fictitious wrestlers could face each other in the first match and then “both make it to the semis” would be quite the achievement…...unles you live in CARMEL PARENT world.
Tony, could you add some credibility here…....?
Gryphon –
WrestlingGenius is annoying with his fictitious wrestlers. It doesn’t help when people add to the nonsense liked “Carmel Parent.”
It’s time this Fernandez bologna stops.
Good Luck to two fine young men at their first States.
Divsion 1
96  Brian Realbuto (Somers)
Division II
96  David Occhipinti (Croton-Harmon)
Thanks Tony!
who is fernandez? did that kid place last year? because I remember a fernandez placing at 25, but I was pretty sure he graduated…. anyone care to comment?
Fernandez is a fictitious wrestler created by the individual who posts as Wrestling Genius, Wrestling God and Tony Riga.
Anyone familiar with Heyman (7th state ranked) and Bloss (6th state ranked)? They meet 1st round at 125….I think Heyman beat Derek Brown (#2 state ranked and state champ @ 119 last year)
Ditto for Majerus vs Capone
152......third and fourth ranked in the state respectively...Can Capone upset 2nd place finisher last year145?Your thoughts>>>>>>>>>>>>>
WrestlingGenius –
Do us all a favor, go to the state brackets, find Matt Fernandez and point out to us his weight class, his school and who his first-round opponent is?
Thank you. If you can locate this so-called Matt Fernandez, then I am in the wrong. If not, go talk about Matt Fernandez on another blog because you have become quite annoying.
Wrestlinggenius –
Here is the website for you:
http://www.nysphsaa.org/championships/winter/
Tony
Michael Berl is wrestling genius. Don’t let him play you like that. You can tell from his writing style, use of commas and what an idiot he is. Just ignore the subject and it will go away.
Does anyone know if this kid John Newman is good that Swertfager’s wrestling? Does he have a tough draw?
JJ –
Newman beat Fordham Prep’s Dan Argast by one point in the Catholic State final. Argast is a very good wrestler who apparently got hosed by an official’s bad call in the final.
Excuse me “tony your way too easy” who do you think you are? I don’t know you or genius, you got all my posts deleted, I didn’t say anything wrong. Look guy, the bottom line is any name could be anybody, you could be genius too, for all anyone knows, so as long as nothing dumb or offensive is said, WHICH THERE WASN’T, get the hell off my back. that’s all I’m going to say to you, no need to respond.
and I just realized how tough a draw genovesi has. Even if he gets out of the first round, he faces desena from garden city. I’ve never seen anyone so catlike at 215, I believe he is either ranked 2nd or 3rd in the state. It is going to be a hard road for jake.
Desena is 4th
JJ
Should Swertfager get by his first round opponent, he faces the winner of Josh Peters( 3rd state ranked and 5th
189 last year) vs Jake Newcomb ( 8th state ranked and 4th171 last year).Swertfager’s got power and knows all “the right” moves…Although an underdog, the kids got game!
Meys is in the lower bracket!
Tony-
I was unable to find the GODLY Fernandez on the bracket, BUT i did some research just for you and it seems as if Fernandez moved to Miami and is now wrestling for Horeb Christian. It also seems that he gained a lot of weight since he is now 215 when last year he was much lighter. Here’s the link:
http://www.miamiherald.com/620/story/307184.html
Now when you go to this site and see that indeed, Fernandez is real and you see that he is the top wrestler on his team, I want you and everyone else on the blog to apologize.
Tony or anyone else fot that matter, how come I did not get a wild card?
Yours truly,
The Great Schup
WrestlingGENIUS
Great, you found him. Now he’ll have to move again.
Tony….Anyone who might be able to help,
Have Liguori and Brown @ 125 faced each other this year?
Have Clemente and Troy @ 140 “” “” “” “” ” ?

genovesi wrestled desena this off season at war at the shore in jersey and lost either 6-2 or 6-3, so if he wrestles good he has a shot
wow, I am amazed he wrestled so close with desena, he must have taken mobility lessons from me. I saw desena at two tournaments this year and he was tough, very versatile and always with his boys. he has a high c that looks like guys at 145 take
UDIT THAKUR IS HAWT.
yaaaay!
hehe. <3
