Nationals update

March
27

I apologize for not putting results up yesterday, but they were moving slow. As of the 7:43 update, Andrew Lenzi of Fordham Prep is the only are wrestler remaining. Lenzi, who is wrestling in the sophomore Nationals, won his first three matches, but Colin Shober of Pennsylvania decisioned Lenzi, 7-2 in the semis. Lenzi will wrestle in the consolation semifinals.

Here is the rundown by class:

Freshman: Suffern’s Justin Artrip was the lone Section 1 rep. He opened with a win before a loss put him in the consolation bracket. Artrip won his first consi wrestleback, but dropped a 9-5 decision in his next match.

Sophomore: Besides Lenzi, Mahopac’s Justis Flamio won his first two matches on day one, then lost a close decision. Flamio won his first wrestleback earlier today before Patrick Prada of Maryland decisioned him, 5-0.

Junior: This boasted the largest Section 1 contingent. Edegmont’s Genta Murayama lost his first match, then ripped off three straight wins before a 13-7 loss to Maryland’s Andrew Bannister. … Fox Lane’s Joey Grippi won his opening match Wednesday, but lost his second. Grippi decisioned Jared Messina of Section 6-Cheektowaga in his first wrestlbeack match, but lost 5-0 to Monroe-Woodbury’s Jamie Franco, a 2008 NY state Division I champ. … Ardsley’s Danny Manley won and then lost his first-day matches. Manley rebounded to take his first wrestleback only to drop a 12-4 verdict to Virginia’s Jared Anogos. … Ardsley’s Derrick Longo won his first two matches, then lost his next two, including a 5-4 decision to New York’s Nathan Skiba. … Fox Lane’s Luke Speno ripped his way to three straight wins on Wednesday, but lost in the quarters to NY state Division I 145-pound champion John Greisheimer of Section 8. Florida’s Kendrick Sanders then elminated Speno, 6-4. … Ossining’s James Brundage, who finished fifth in the sophomore Nationals last year, opened with two wins Wednesday but lost his third match. Brundage returned and won his first two wrestlebacks, but Ohio’s J.T. Rice scored a 3-1 win, ending Brundage’s quest for a second straight all-America finish. … Westlake’s Will Carter took his first match, then lost his next two.

Senior: The Senior Nationals begin Friday with Yorktown’s Mike Ahearn and Mahopac’s Dominick Oddo representing Section 1.

Bonilla-Bowman wrestling in NCAA Championships

March

Former three-time sectional champ and two-time state placefinisher Jonny Bonilla-Bowman (East Ramapo) won his 157-pound first-round match, overcoming fourth-seeded Brandon Becker of Indiana, 4-3.

Bonilla-Bowman, the CAA champ, had a first-round bye. Trailing 1-0 entering the third period, Bonilla-Bowman chose neutral. He scored a quick takedown, cut Becker, the took him down again for a 4-2 lead. Bonilla-Bowman cut Becker to make the score 4-3.

Bonilla-Bowman will face 12th-seeded Justin Zupancic of Stanford, who upset fifth-seeded C.P. Schlatter of Minnesota, 5-4 in their match.

Thank you for a great season

March
13

To the wrestlers, coaches and parents, thank you for a great 2007-08 wrestling season. The only drawback though, is that it is now officially over. I will be moping around the house until November when the 2008-09 season kicks off.

Wrestlers, coaches and parents, if it was not for your cooperation this season I would not have been able to do my job, and for that, I am quite grateful. There were probably many days during the season where the last thing you needed was to take a call from me (following a long day at school and practice) or see me approaching you with my gleeming dome, asking to interview you at a tournament or match. But, wrestlers, you all were always accomdating.

Congratulations to all of the wrestlers for making it through another grueling season. It doesn’t matter what skill level you’re at, you all deserve credit for competing in this GREAT, but underappreciated sport.

To the seniors, you will all be missed, especially Mahopac 4-time sectional champ Dominick Oddo and Harrison 3-time champ Mark Arcara. I remember Oddo as a 2004 Empire State Games bronze medalist in 2004. That is when I first interviewed him and the following February, that little freshman 96-pounder won the title, joining his father as a sectional champion.

I remember Mark Arcara as a 6-year old, coming around the matches and tournament with his father, Frank, or ‘Cuz’ as everyone knows him. Harrison coach Vinny Nicita told me that Mark would be his next great wrestler, and he was right.

I would later meet up with Mark and his classmate/teammate/best friend, Al Volpe, as 6th-graders. I was doing a long-term Social Studies position from the first day of school in 2001. In walks Mark and Al for first period. During class, I would often ask Mark how he did in a kids tournament or how he was feeling. The students thought I was nuts. It just seemed like yesterday. Now, Arcara and Volpe are seniors and will graduate in June. Guys, thank you for always being respectful in class those four months and any other time I substituted for one of your 7th- or 8th-grade teachers. And, thank you for always being cool with me when it came to an interview.

I remember New Rochelle coach Jim Guccione telling me five years ago to keep an eye on a pair of promising eighth-graders he had in Tom Antonioli and Danny Zimon. Guccione was excited to have this two New Rochelle kids-club graduates stepping up to varsity. Guccione had every right to be excited.

All Antonioli did was become the first New Rochelle wrestler to place in sectionals five times and this year, win the 145-pound sectional title. Antonioli will graduate as the program’s winningest wrestler. Zimon was a sectional finalist in 2005 and placed two other times and amassed more than 100 wins. Together, the seniors were a dynamic tandem. Congratulations to both and all the best in college.

Before I conclude this post, let me cite the great season Lakeland/Panas’ Joe Hauser had. The junior bumped up two weight classes, from 125 to 135, in late January, won the Super 16, Divisional and was a sectional finalist. He accomplished all of this despite losing his father last fall in a car accident. It is difficult enough to deal with the passing of your father, let alone compete in a mentally and physically-demanding sport like wrestling, keep it together and have a successful season. Joe Hauser, the Section 1 wrestling community should be proud to have you. We will see you next year – in a sectional final and then in Albany for the state championships.

And I hope to see all of you next November. Thank you, and thank you to all of the positive contributors to this blog.

All-Section dinner

March
13

Driving home from Rochester Monday after the state championships I was feeling low because I realized that the 2007-08 high school wrestling season was over. However, when I thought about it I realized that the season still had one more night – the All-Section dinner Thursday.

I always look forward to the all-section dinner because it allows me to converse with the wrestlers, coaches and parents one final time as Section 1 honors the wrestlers.

It was a change of venue tonight. After Colonial Terrace annually hosting the dinner, the Holiday Inn in Fishkill had the honor because of last month’s fire which claimed Colonial Terrace.

The All-Section had a new format with the Section 1 Hall of Fame inductees and award winners announced. In previous years, this portion was announced prior to the championship finals.

The Section 1 Wrestling Coaches Association inducted former Mount Vernon outstanding coach Jim Lee and five of his former sectional champs/teammates – Bucky Smith, Tony Crawford, Horace Perry, Rich Numa and Billy Beard. What made this special was that the men presented Lee with a plaque for what he meant to them and the program. The six men huddled together on the dais and savored the moment. I don’t think there was a dry eye within that group.

Following this poignant moment, Yonkers’ Elliot Maldonado, Pearl River’s John Coffey, Clarkstown North’s Steven Ramos, Mamaroneck’s Femi Wheeler and Lakeland/Panas’ Joe Hauser received these awards – Evelyn Negron, Julius D’Agostino, Matt Moore and Bill Snyder, respectively.

Former Valley Central coach and current Nyack AD Bob Zifchock, who also assists Section 1 Wrestling Chair Eric Romanino, gave an excellent speech concerning Section 1’s coming together this season and being a ‘Choir’ instead of a ‘Soloist.’ He cited this in the state practices and at the state championships.

Zifchock also told those in attendence about one of his former wrestlers, Jimmy, who was legally blind. Despite this, Zifchock said Jimmy taught him how to talk to his wrestlers. Zifchock pointed out that a few years ago he saw Jimmy, a Social Studies teacher on Long Island, called out his name and Jimmy, responded with ‘Coach!’

New Rochelle’s Jim Guccione was named the Conference I coach of the year, Fox Lane’s Joe Amuso, Section 1’s dean of wrestling coaches, was selected as the Conference II coach of the year, and Nanuet’s Brenden Rogers was chosen the Conference III coach of the year.

John Jay’s Bill Swertfager, who brought the program back from extinction seven years ago, was named the 2007-08 Section 1 Coach of the year. A couple of things stand out from Bill’s speech. The first was telling the wrestlers to stay on the mat during the offseason, at least three days a week, and wrestle in a minimum of 5-6 spring tournaments. He also noted Section 1’s improvement in the 2008 state championships as well as the in-season improvements within Section 1 this season.

Bill credited his family, sons, John and Mark, and daughter, Theresa, for their support and love, and saved the best for last, wife, Diane, the Hen Hud volleyball coach. Bill made everyone laugh when he said that he is the second best coach in his family based on Diane’s eight consecutive sectional volleyball titles and back-to-back state titles.

Bill summed up his speech by saying that one day, Section 1 will be state champions, which drew a cheer from everyone.

Mahopac coach Sal Imbimbo, who was fired up and enthusiastic as the Master of Ceremony, gave Rick Contrata, the official Section 1 wrestling website administrator and creator, an award from the Section 1 Coaches Association for his positive contributions. It was well deserved. Great job ‘The Veer.’

To sum it up, it was the best All-Section dinner I have attended. A great job by everyone involved.

Semifinal and consolation results

March
9

We are continuing to have wireless problems here at the Blue Cross Arena and we (reporters) are not receiving an assistance so folks, please be patient today.

11:11 Ryan Leblanc (3-Morrisville-Eaton) tech. fall Will Carter (Westlake), 17-2.

10:54: John Greisheimer 9 (Wantagh) pin. John Coffey (Pearl River), 3:08. Greisheimer took Coffey down quickly and then tilted him for a 4-0 lead after one.

10:54: James Brundage (Ossining) dec. Jesse Villella (4-Chenango Forks), 4-1. Brundage scores a second-period reversal to take a 2-0 lead. Brundage will place in the top six.

10:54: Zeke Stambovsky (Nyack) dec. Brendan Dwyer (5-Pittsford), 5-4. Stambosky trailed 4-3 early in the third, but reversed Dwyer and was close to tilting him twice.

10:54: David Rice (Edgemont) dec. Matt Matt Cartusciello (PSAL-Petrides), 4-2. Rice had a second-period bar and an escape point.

10:54: Cody Legg (Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk) dec. Ray Wang (Edgemont), 5-2.

10:54: Genta Murayama (Edgemont) dec. Brett Sewalt (4-Waverly), 3-1 in overtime. I missed this match.

10:02: Ryan Blauvelt (3-Oswego) dec. Dominick Oddo (Mahopac), 8-7. Oddo led 7-5 entering the third period. He cut Blauvelt to open the period. Blauvelt was in on a shot attempt with about 30 seconds remaining, but Oddo forced a stalemate. Blauvelt came right back and hit a low double to upset Oddo.

9:56: Andrew Lenzi (CHSAA-Fordham Prep) maj. dec. Brandan McKeown (Burnt Hills/Ballston Lake), 14-5. Lenzi secured a takedown and put McKeown right to his back in the opening seconds for a quick 5-0 lead. Lenzi would lead 7-1 after one and was never in any danger. Lenzi will face Brian Benton (2-Amsterdam) in the 130-pound final.

9:41: Shawn Brown (10-Canton) dec. Joey Grippi (Fox Lane), 8-7. What a gut-wrenching defeat for Grippi, who hit a high single and put Brown to his back with seven seconds remaining in the match for a 7-3 lead, but Brown, who had underhooks in, flipped Grippi over and to his back for a four-point move in the final seconds.

9:37: T.J. Popolizio (2-Shenendehowa) dec. Mark Arcara (Harrison), 2-0. Popolizio scored a first-period takedown. In the second period, he rode Arcara out, running a bar series, but was unable to turn Arcara. Popolizio chose bottom for the third period. Arcara appeared to have Popolizio tilted with 37 seconds left, but Popolizio got to his belly. The official got to a one count.

9:32: Joe Smaldone (5-Geneva) dec. Ryan Osleeb (North Salem), 8-3. A pair of first-period takedowns for Smaldone, including one in the final few seconds, was the difference as he led 4-1.

9:20: Justis Flamio (Mahopac) dec. Steven Keith (11-Shoreham Wading River), 8-3. After Flamio lost to Keith in last year’s 96 semifinals, he returned the favor. Flamio and Keith traded a takedown and reversal, respectively, in the first period. A Keith shot attempt resulted in a stalemate early in the second period. Flamio hit a shot and put Keith to his back for four points and a 6-2 lead. Keith escaped to open the third, but failed to get in on Flamio. Flamio will face Nick Arajau (8-Syosset) in the 112 final.

9:13: C.J. Howard (5-Pittsford) dec. Steven Rodrigues (Fox Lane), 1-0. A second-period escape was the lone point. Howard sank legs immediately in the third period. He was banged for a stall warning with 36 seconds remaining.

9:02: Brian Realbuto (Somers) dec. Shane Connolly (9-Warwick Valley), 5-3. A second-period reversal and 3-point tilt powers Realbuto into the consi semis and a top-6 finish.

Semifinal Sunday

March
9

The wrestles are on the mat preparing for what they are hoping will result in state championships.

The semifinalists once again are:

112 – Justis Flamio (Mahopac) vs. Steven Keith (11-Shoreham Wading-River). Keith is the 2007 Division I 96-pound state champion. Keith beat Flamio in last year’s semifinals.

112 – Ryan Osleeb (North Salem) vs. Joe Smaldone (5-Geneva). One thing Osleeb can expect is legs. Section 5 wrestlers are notorious for running legs and they do it quite effectively.

125 – Joey Grippi (Fox Lane) vs. Shawn Brown (10-Canton).

130 – Andrew Lenzi (Fordham Prep) vs. Brandan McKeown (2-Burnt Hills/Ballston Lake).

145 – John Coffey (Pearl River) vs. John Greisheimer (8-Wantagh). Greisheimer decisioned New Rochelle’s Tom Antonioli, 11-6 in the quarters yesterday.

160 – Will Carter (Westlake) vs. Ryan Leblanc (3-Morrisville-Eaton).

I’ll update each semi-final match and also keep you posted on the wrestleback results. The wrestlers still active in wrestlebacks are:

Brian Realbuto (Somers)
Steven Rodrigues (Fox Lane)
Mark Arcara (Harrison)
Genta Murayama (Edgemont)
Dominick Oddo (Mahopac)
Derrick Longo (Ardsley)
David Rice (Edgemont)
Ray Wang (Edgemont)

Finally. it’s time to WRESTLE

March
8

The wait is over. I’m here in snowy Rochester watching the wrestlers line up for the procession, which will start at 10 a.m.

After three looooooonng weeks, we are finally going to see wrestling. Let’s hope this is the last time we have a three-week wait before states.

Blue Cross Arena is about half full, but the crowd is still filling in. I spoke to John Jay coach Bill Swertfager and Westlake coach Sky Smith when I came in and they said the Section 1 wrestlers all made weight. That is a good start.

Harrison three-time sectional champion and career-win leader Mark Arcara will carry the Section 1 Columbia-blue flag.

I will be updating the blog as the day progresses. Let’s hope Section 1 has a good day.

This wait is driving me crazy!

March
5

I don’t know about anyone else, but this three-week wait until the State Championships is ridiculous!

I’m only a fan and I’m climbing the walls, waiting for this. I could just imagine what the wrestlers are coaches are going through. They all must be suffering from ‘wrestling-room’ fever.

All the best to the Section 1 wrestlers and the Fordham Prep wrestlers, especially the seniors, at this weekend’s State Championships. This is a veteran team Section 1 is sending to Rochester so many of them know what to expect.
