O’Connell/Pearl River results

December
29

Here are the results from the tournament at Pearl River today. It’s been a long day, so I’ll keep it short and sweet. Warwick was really impressive, as was the Nyack duo of Thakur and Marchese. There were some really exciting matches in the finals as well. Off to sleep for me now. Happy new year to everybody!

Section 1 shakeup could be coming

December
26

The budget crunch is bad and could get worse.

In anticipation, Section 1 is considering a proposal that would align schools in leagues based on geography — not enrollment or competitiveness — that will go into effect next school year if it is approved as expected.

Harold Gutmann has more details today in The Journal News and on LoHud.com. “Here’s the link to the story.”:http://www.lohud.com/article/20081226/SPORTS02/812260356/-1/SPORTS&referrer=NEWSFRONTCAROUSEL

Let’s hear your thoughts.

NCN Duals

December
22

Well I just got back, and as some of you may already know, John Jay is the winner. I have all the scores from the individual matches, which are posted below. As for box scores, I apologize, but with so many matches taking place, and the meet starting at 4 p.m., there was just no way for me to type them all up at the meet and file my story by deadline. As it was, I had to hurry. I will however, try to get as many boxes as possible from the coaches themselves. This brings me to another point. In all sports, not just wrestling, we count on coaches to call in matches and games. When I am not in the office, when I’m covering matches, I can’t track down scores. I understand coaches sometimes get frustrated waiting on hold, but if we don’t get the scores called in, we don’t have them for the paper or the blog. So if anyone reading is a coach or involved in the program in any way, please try your best to call your matches in.

One more note on box scores, I was able to get all the John Jay matches from Day 1 courtesy of Bill Swertfager. Those are also below.

Today’s results and more

December
20

Well I was at Clarkstown North today for an extremely fun and well-run tournament. The tournament was run in a round robin format, and the home team had a great day, taking five individual titles. I wasn’t in the office today, so I don’t have all the results from NCN duals, but I do have some info. First of all, I want to extend congratulations to both Lakeland’s Joseph Hauser and Somers’ Brian Realbuto for getting their 100 wins. Always impressive to see someone get to the century mark, and I also think it’s an indication of the hard work these guys put in.

Looks like a washout

December
19

I haven’t spoken to anybody from Yorktown yet (I do have calls in) but the Yorktown Central Schools are closed, along with pretty much everything else, so I’m guessing NC duals will be starting tomorrow morning and not tonight. I will post any further updates.

I know people were interested in this result, so I called up Bill Swertfager and got the box. He said Monroe-Woodbury is really tough, which is no surprise considering they dominated the Section 9 dual-meet tourney thoroughly.

I was at North Rockland today, where the Red Raiders were extremely impressive in winning 63-7 over Port Chester. As for the weekend, obviously weather could be a factor for tomorrow, and I will start making phone calls as soon as I get up to see what’s up with the schedule. John Jay repeats

December
16

Once again,  John Jay is the Section 1 dual-meet wrestling champion. The Indians defeated Suffern in the final, 43-15 after besting Somers 50-27 in the semifinal. Carmel took third by beating Somers in the consolation match. Before I get to the box scores, I found it interesting that, to a man, John Jay seemed to be wrestling with a chip on its shoulder. The Indians seemed like they weren’t being given enough credit because they lost so much to graduation. John Jay was very, very impressive in the final, losing only one match besides two forfeits. Clearly, no one will be underestimating John Jay anymore, if they ever were.

Well, after a long day I’m about to hit the sack. But first, here are the results from the Tiger Tournament today. This just in…

December
12

So the final four is set for Tuesday. Carmel took down Brewster tonight, 50-21 to advance to the semifinals. Some thoughts from Carmel coach Bill Twardy.

“I knew we had our hands full going up against Brewster, they’ve beaten some very good teams already,” he said. “I was nervous going into the match. My guys really seemed to be up for this match.”

Twardy pointed to the match at 171, where Shane Rossiter pinned Bernado Magalhaes, as key.

“When that happened, I knew the tide had turned for us, and we were going in the right direction.”

Twardy said that he expects a battle from Suffern, but he is looking forward to having the home crowd advantage on Tuesday.

“I’ll be honest, I considered Fox Lane to be the No. 1 team in the section. So I know going into that match (against Suffern) I’ll have my hands full,” he said. “The home crowd helps tremendously. We have a great following. I’m very proud of my fans and the booster club. We have tremendous, unconditional support.”
So we’re all set for Tuesday. Carmel vs. Suffern, and Somers vs. John Jay.

Here’s the box, which my colleague took over the phone just minutes ago:

Tiger Tourney seeds and my schedule

December
12

For those clamoring for some info about this weekend’s tournaments, here are the seeds for the 35th Tiger Tournament. As many of you have said, there is an extremely knowledgeable base of wrestling fans out there, and I want to have everybody involved on this blog. So let’s hear your picks for this tournament. I’ll be at McGuire and not Tiger, but I’ll be interested to compare people’s picks on the blog against the actual results. Also, next week I will be at the dual meet semis and finals, a dual match Thursday and the Clarkstown North tournament on Saturday. Admittedly I haven’t seen as many of the top wrestlers in the area as I would like going into the season (it obviously wasn’t my beat last year) but that is going to change in a hurry. Also, stay tuned tonight for the results of Brewster and Carmel. I will post them as soon as they come in.

One semifinal set…

December
11

I just got off the phone with Bill Swertfager of John Jay, and he reported that the Indians bested North Rockland 40-28 to move into the semis. John Jay will take on Somers on Tuesday. Swertfager said that his team “expects a battle against Somers.” Tuesday at Carmel should be a lot of fun.

Two results in…

December
11

For those of you who don’t already know, Suffern topped Fox Lane today, 37-30, and Somers beat Ossining, 43-37.

I spoke to Dennis DiSanto when he called in the results earlier, and he had a few interesting things to say. He pointed to two matches in particular as being key in today’s result.  Joe Izzo, wrestling at 215, wasn’t feeling well yesterday, but he bounced back today to get a key pin. At 152, Anthony Trabucco won a 9-6 decision over Sam Gissen, who won 2 out 3 matches between the two last year. DiSanto said that Trabucco did a lot of offseason training, and the coach felt it paid off today.

I’ve spent the last 20 minutes or so calling coaches about today’s matches. I was able to reach at least one coach from every match (two of whom were on the bus pulling into the opposing school). Here is what’s going on. Fox Lane/Suffern is on, as are Somers/Ossining and North Rockland/John Jay. I did confirm that Brewster/Carmel is postponed. Those teams will instead wrestle tomorrow at Carmel at 4:30 p.m. On another note, I spoke to Brewster coach Tom Looby, who in addition to confirming the postponed match, seemed pretty pumped up about his match with Carmel. He described his team as “up-and-coming,” and obviously a win over Carmel would be big for his squad. We’ll have to wait an extra day on that, however.

Greetings

December
11

Hello everybody. First off, I’d like to introduce myself to those of you who don’t know me as anything other than a name in the paper. My name is Eric Lebowitz, and I will be covering wrestling this season.

I know there has been some anger expressed on this blog. I know how much Section 1 wrestling fans enjoyed Tony’s coverage, and believe me, I am as big a fan of Tony as anybody. He was a tremendous co-worker, and one of the people who made me feel at home when I first came to The Journal News. I miss his presence at the office already.

All I can say (as I told a few coaches I spoke to tonight) is that I’m going to work as hard as possible to make sure the athletes continue to get the high level of coverage they deserve. I didn’t wrestle in high school, but some of my best friends did, so I am well aware of the level of dedication it takes to wrestle, the grueling practices these athletes go through to make weight and maintain the tremendous level of fitness it takes to compete.

With all that said, this is a wrestling blog, so I should talk some wrestling. Below are the results of all the dual-meet matches we got at the paper tonight. I also spoke with John Jay coach Bill Swertfager today, just to get some thoughts on the dual-meet championship from one of the guys who really pushed for it to happen. Swertfager’s Indians host North Rockland today in the quarterfinals, with the winner advancing to Tuesday’s final/semifinals at Carmel. I asked him how this event finally came to be and why he was confident it would be a success. Here are some of his thoughts:

“People had talked about it for five or six years, but nothing ever happened,” he said.“So last year, we really pushed it and a lot of guys got behind it.”
“It’s done all over the country and all over the state, but we just were never to get our arms around it. It’s just extra competition without it costing us any extra points. People have really embraced this thing all over the section. It’s a nice time of year to do this, it’s a great chance for wrestling to get some of the spotlight.”

The last thing I’ll say tonight is that I want to work with all the fans, coaches and athletes to make this season’s coverage as good as possible. Feel free to e-mail me anytime with thoughts, questions or observations. My e-mail is elebowit@lohud.com. I’ll be at the Maguire tournament on Saturday and at Carmel on Tuesday, so feel free to say hello. I look forward to meeting everybody.
