First-week matches

December
1

Fox Lane Parent, I apologize for the delay, but I had to complete wrestling previews and field hockey all-star stories. Here are some of the opening-week matches:

Wednesday, Dec. 3

Fox Lane at Nyack — I will be at this match and I am looking forward to seeing Fox Lane’s sectional champs, Joey Grippi, Steven Rodrigues and Luke Speno, and Nyack’s top two wrestlers, Udit Thakur and Sal Marchese.

New Rochelle at Suffern — New Rochelle has sectional placefinishers Adjoni Burrows and Matt Jankowski returning. Keep an eye on Suffern’s lightweights, specifically Nick Oliveto and Justin Artrip. These two guys are downright nasty good. Then add in David Bailen, Dan Ventarola and senior captain Julian Negri and the Mounties are loaded below 140.

North Rockland and Mamaroneck — Reigning 285-pound sectional champ Cristian Garcia and sectional placedfinisher Joe Slane return. Mamaroneck boasts sectional placefinisher Femi Wheeler.

Clarkstown at Rye — State qualifier Steven Ramos, sectional placewinner Andrew Greenburg and Rob Kantrowitz headline a veteran Rams group. Rye’s Eamon Marley, a top-6 sectional finisher leads the Garnets.

Clarkstown South at White Plains — This marks the beginning of Brenden Rogers’ tenure for the Vikings. All he did during his Nanuet career was lead the Golden Knights to four Section 1 Division I team titles.

East Ramapo at Scarsdale — Djimitry Georges graduated, but East Ramapo has the big man back, Rockland County finalist and sectional placefinisher, Patrice Castor.

Somers at Pearl River — All discussion of Somers starts with sectional champ and state fourth-place finisher Brian Realbuto. In two seasons the freshman has surpassed 70 wins. Pearl River lost two-time sectional titlist and state finisher John Coffey and Rockland County 152-champ Anthony Raimone to graduation, but Joe Lieberman, 4th in the section last year, is back.

Harrison at Brewster — Life for the Huskies without three-time sectional winner Mark Arcara and all-section wrestler Al Volpe begins. Harrison returns the big man, Mike “Beef” Protano, who finished third at 285 last season, and junior Andrew Planamento. Brewster had an excellent 2007-08 season and will be led by senior Chris Gogatz and their lightweight duo of Jimmy Duncan and Kyle MacAlpin.

Ossining at Port Chester — Whenever you get a chance, watch Ossining because of senior two-time sectional victor and state 3rd-place finisher, James Brundage. He is slick and quick on his feet and immensely strong. Big John and Alex Calero moved on, but new father Greg Domestico (he and his wife welcomed a future sectional champ two weeks ago) returns Max Josephson.

Lakeland/Panas at Hen Hud — This one did not appear on the Section 1 schedule. Thank you for letting me know. The Rebels main man is Joe Hauser, a sectional finalist at 135 last season. Hauser wrestled the entire season at 125, but bumped up two weight classes at the end of January and won the Super 16 135 title.

Thursday, Dec. 4

John Jay at Carmel — These teams opened last season with each other and the Indians dealt the Rams their first loss in two years.

Saturday, Dec. 6

Tournament Saturday begins with the Tony Carlucci (at Port Chester), Bernie Miller (at Rye), Mamaroneck and Woodlands tournaments.

    Hey T

    Welcome back.

    I missed your curly LOCKS.

This should be a great season as there is alot of talent on many teams.

Can’t wait to see you smile in person.

Our opener @ P.C. should be “very interesting”

    See you around the MATS.

    Miles

  2. Big O

The big O will roll over PC!!!!

  3. Fox Lane Parent

    Phil,

You wanted my predictions. I am not familiar with the squads, but you can never rule out the top coaches. Carmel, Sleepy (I went to grammar and high school with Brian Tomkins, who was a terrific wrestler), Fox Lane, John Jay, Mahopac etc. These squads seem to reload every year. PC coach is a terrific guy and a real gentleman, but he has lost the family! After the first of the year I’ll be happy to challenge Tony for tourney predictions. Somers is always tough.

Can any of you guys guess Brian Tomkin’s childhood nick name? Give it a shot!

  4. Tony Pinciaro

    Fox Lane Parent –

By the way, will you make weight for the season?

You are already better at predictions than I am.

Be nice to Coach Tompkins. I don’t want Brian mad at me.

  5. skinnyvinny

Lakeland/Panas @ Hen Hud on Wednesday if anyone cares

  6. HenHud

    Hey Tony,
There is another match this week…...Lakeland/Panas will be coming over to us at Hen Hud on Wed.

  7. skinnyvinny

Figured maybe people would like to know…considering Hauser will be wrestling and hen hud’s got a set of 5 seniors on the roster that can push themselves

  8. Fox Lane Parent

I’d love to see an surge from small school like Ardsley or Edgemont. There may be sleepers out there. Totally under the radar. Don’t forget the privates. They are ver strong in the early tourney’s. Horace Mann is always tough.

  9. phil

Was Mr Tomkins a wrestler for Woodlands ? They had some

tough teams around 1970, along with Sleepy and Ossining.

The woodland teams would all run out in single file with their

hoods down over their faces, looking real tough heh, which
    they were :)

Even Peekskill had some very good wrestlers.

    cya !1

  10. 51

byram hills and ardsley dual tomorrow….if anyone cares

  11. New Panther

Look at for Edgemont.. they are a force to be reckoned for both big and small school teams..

  12. 51

i think ardsley is going to have a huge year, they’re dominant at almost every weight

  13. Shadow

Tony any chance for a Grippi/Thakur match on day one?

  14. David

Does anyone know Carmel’s complete schedule? If so would someone mind emailing it to me @ david.craparo@mbia.com? A complete schedule of all teams including tournements would be nice.

  15. 10591

    TONY, or anyone else,

Can you give me a briefing on how Sleepy Hollow will look this year, and what kind of kids they have wrestling?

    Thank you

  16. Fox Lane Parent

I have heard that Tony has, due to budgetary cuts, been let go by the Journal News. As we all know, Tony is a zealot when it comes to wrestling coverage in Section One, I’ve sent an email to the following people and encourage you to do the same. We need to support Tony and his coverage of wrestling in Section One. We need him back at the table covering our sport.

    Steve Lovas “Fox Lane Parent”

The President and publisher..Michael Fisch mfisch@lohud.com

The Editor is Harry Freeman hfreeman1@lohud.com

The head of the sports dept is Susie Arth sarth@lohud.com

The senior managing editor is CynDee Royal croyle@lohud.com

lets all send emails supporting Tony!

  17. Lowsingle

are you sure? That is ridiculous!!! How did you find out?

  18. phil

    What the ???

  19. phil

I work for the news paper out west for the same company,

and its true about them letting go 10% of the work force.

I am taking a 40% cut in hours, and may eventually lose my
    job as well.

    I wish Tony good luck

  20. kk1224

Without this blog, there is no reason for me to continue to read the JN…...

  21. Tonys the man

I hope this isnt true. Tony does a great job and goes way beyond what I imagine he gets paid to provide the wrestling community with in depth coverage and insight. Please join Fox Lane parent and I, get off the sidelines, and write to the journal news and let them know that they need to find another way to reduce costs and not to reduce services. How could they do this right now? Not just because it is at the beginning of wrestling season but more importantly to a family man right before the holidays. Really poor!!!!
The email adresses are posted above.

  22. Harrison Parent

Thank you Fox Lane Parent for the links. We all need to do what’s necessary to keep Tony. As you all know, no one covers Section 1 sports like he does. He’s the best!

  23. Rockland Parent

My email to the Journal News:
    _
    To The Journal News:

From the selfish point of view of a fan, I was saddened to learn that Tony Pinciaro will no longer be reporting on high school wrestling. As a businessman, on the other hand, I understand that business is business. And yet even from a purely commercial perspective, I believe that you have greatly underestimated Tony’s value.

Tony is far more than a reporter. He is, of course, a terrific writer and a walking high school sports encyclopedia. But in addition, as the public face of LoHud to the wrestling community and to other sports fans in densely populated Rockland and Westchester, Tony is a major asset to your organization. You cannot put a price on the goodwill Tony generates on your behalf. If you don’t agree, you might want to spend eight or nine hours in a sweaty gym some winter Saturday in order to witness the esteem in which Tony is held by wrestlers, their parents, and their fans. The term “rock star” comes to mind. You can’t buy that kind of PR.

Any enterprise that faces the public would covet the positive image Tony creates for you in a community that is known for its loyalty and enthusiasm. I understand that times are tough; still, speaking as a businessman, I believe that letting Tony go is a very shortsighted business move. I hope you will reconsider.

  24. Rye

I sent me emails. Looks like over 30 full time staffers were let go.

  25. Tonys the man

    I guess its official…

The economic problems really hit home when i heard this. Some of our personal lives have not been affected by the financial issues facing our country but when you see something like this you really feel it. Tony did a great job and was an asset to the Journal News. Hope to hear from him.

  26. WP

    Tony…

Terrible news!!! Hope to still see you at the Carlucci Saturday in Port Chester or next week at Mamaroneck or in the future. Come relax and watch.

  27. The Donald

    Damn Shame

  28. Cauli

What contrast: the excitement of the reading the season-opening previews vs. the disbelief and disappointment that Pinch got caught up in the budget cutting machinery.

    Good luck, Tony.
