Here are the results from the tournament at Pearl River today. It’s been a long day, so I’ll keep it short and sweet. Warwick was really impressive, as was the Nyack duo of Thakur and Marchese. There were some really exciting matches in the finals as well. Off to sleep for me now. Happy new year to everybody!

It was a very well run tournament like all ways. But I feel that the refs are way to in constant this year. No two refs call a take down the same way. And the way theyrefuses to call stalling is ridiculous. Wick real hurts us in states. If any of you have been up there u know what I meen.

refuse to call stalling?? all one ref (no names of course) does is call stalling.. and his calls are horrible.. if he was a lawyer he would have been disbarred a long time ago.. lucky for him hes a ref instead and has nothing said to him.. he was booed at the tourny yesterday.. enough said.
Booch is right on. Its not just calling stalling, its when and what situations they call it. I agree that most of the section 1 refing is not consistent with other refs around the state. Take a look at the reaction from out of section teams (especially LI) during our tournements, they are baffled by some of these calls.
i think that most of the issue is with some of the refs that need to hang up their whistle. Yes he is right that its very different when wrestlers leave section one and have better, maybe even wiser refs. But before we can fix that we need to fix the refs within sectin one to actually know what they are calling and if they are making the correct call. Again going back to one specific ref that comes to mind with this I couldnt tell you how many coaches and wrestlers have been extreamly annoyed with the horrible calls he makes. just yesterday in the same match the both coaches from each school jumped up and in frustration from the awful calls. he was booed. if we take care of getting rid of the refs in section one that have no idea what they are calling we can then try to get up to par with the rest of the state.
I can’t believe these unbelievably delusional people who check this blog every second and constantly complain. By the way, none of these kids are actually good.
I couldn’t agree more. The people on this blog complain way too much and they’re lucky that wrestling even gets the coverage that it gets. I’m sure wrestling was a big deal at some point, maybe even as late as the 1980s? Nah, that’s probably even a stretch. Regardless, other than the football players being forced by their coaches to do something to stay in shape during the off-season, nowadays all the really good athletes around here play basketball, track or hockey.
Comments from hmmm are puzzling.
“But before we can fix that we need to fix the refs within sectin one to actually know what they are calling and if they are making the correct call”
“if we take care of getting rid of the refs in section one that have no idea what they are calling we can then try to get up to par with the rest of the state.”
Can you explain exactly what you mean by those statements?
If it is so easy, why not become a ref yourself?
A serious issue we is a lack of refs. We do not have enuff so some guys are doing varsity matches in there seconded year and they have not had the chance to tighten there game up yet. So any of you gut or girls who been around the sport please step up and put on the stripes. It will only benefit our kids and help out the section

To Wrestling Stinks and Wrestling Stinks II,
If you had a chance to look at the stud football teams from Section 6, yes the section that won the state in 4 of the 5 classifications, you would see many wrestlers on their rosters. If you look at the rosters for the LI Championship teams they also contain many wrestlers (Almost the whole Babylon wrestling team plays football).
If section 1 kids want to excel in football they should play basketball or wrestle, the kids that say they are just going to lift for football get out of what ever cardiovascular shape that football gives them. Come to a wrestling match or tournament and see what next years good football players are doing now to get tough (Example Brundage of Ossining).
I have developed many fine football players through my former wrestling program, for example Jim Smith of Nanuet (All State Wrestler 2004 and Captian of SUNY Cortland football 2008). I believe you need to rethink your narrow minded thoughts on wrestling.

It is easy to get frustrated at officiating. For the most part, they do a good job and mistakes are a nature of the beast.
The bigger problem is the lack of people who want to be referees. Just like coaching, it is a tough job where the hours and stress certainly outweigh the money. Most refs do it for the same reason as coaches, for the love of the sport. The difference is that refs don’t get the same gratitude and kudos for their time spent helping the sport and children.
If people are frustrated by the current referees, they should do the same thing that people do when they are frustrated by coaches. They should become a referee or at least encourage others who are more suitable to become referees.
I am not a referee, but am actively involved in wrestling and helping a team. We could use others to step up and help as well instead of criticizing.
there is one ref that i have known for my 7 years of being involved with wrestling that is known for making horrible calls. i was once score keeper so i do know what they should be calling and how many points it all is and things of that nature.. i dont know what was so confusing though, some refs make awful calls and cause good wrestlers to loose matches that they should have one because they make terrible calls. if we got rid of refs that are known for their lack of skill in calling a match properly then we can move on to making the quality of our refs who are skilled enough to match up to the rest of the state.
There is no doubt that some refs are weak. But the point is the supply of refs is bare so we don’t have many, if any, replacements for our weaker refs. Just like in anything else, the more candidates to choose from, the better the end product. And vice-versa of course.
i agree 100% i was just trying to state the fact that before we can get our refs up to the equivalency of new york state we need to get refs that know what the hell theyre doing. the fact that theres so few people becoming refs is the issue behind that.
