Super 16 results

January
31

You know that poll I created this week, the one asking who would finish second to Fox Lane at Super 16? Can I admit something? When I first put it out, I didn’t include Carmel as one of the options. Not because I think Carmel stinks or anything. It’s just that as I scanned the tournament teams, I somehow skipped over Carmel. Subconsciously I guess the Rams didn’t register as a contender. And most of you agreed. Even after I went back and added them a few minutes later, they only finished fourth in the voting.

Most of you can figure out where I’m going with this. Carmel didn’t just finish second today in its home gym, it won the whole thing. Count me among the surprised. It was the first time in at least 20 years for Carmel.

If that wasn’t enough, can you believe it happened without Mike Rose, Carmel’s top dog, winning a title? Rose dropped a much-anticipated 125 final to Mahopac’s Justis Flamio, who bumped up today specifically so he could face Rose. Instead it was Alex Othmer (215) and Kevin Davidson (135) carrying the flag. Othmer pinned his guy in 33 seconds.

Meanwhile, not only did Fox Lane not win, it finished fifth. The absence of Steven Rodrigues and Luke Speno really hurt. Still, the Foxes had more titles than anyone else: Sam Speno decisioned Andrew Planamento in a quality 96, Joey Grippi predictably took 130, and Pat Fay came through at 119.

Mike Dougherty had the story, which I’ll link to tomorrow. I added the consi finals at the bottom of this post. They’re in a different format than the rest of the results, but it’s 12:42 a.m. and I’m too tired to change it.

Rockland County Championships results (UPDATED)

January
31

Sorry about the late updates everyone. The finals didn’t start until 6:45 and I didn’t leave TZ until well after 9. When I got to the office my laptop decided it didn’t want to connect to the internet, so all the results I’d painstakingly typed out during the tournament had to be retyped. I called my roommate, who knows computers, and in the middle of our conversation the phone cut out and wouldn’t reconnect. God I hate technology.

Anyway, you probably want to hear about Counties. As you can see from the team key below, North Rockland won it over Suffern in what was, as predicted, a two-team race. Both had four champions. The difference was that two of North Rockland’s champs (Cristian Garcia and Jon Didio) won by pin, netting extra points. All four Suffern champs won by decision. Although I must say, when Asher Kramer, Justin Artrip, and Nick Oliveto won the first three finals and Julian Negri took the 130 belt, I though Suffern had a stranglehold. Then you look at the rest of the brackets and remember that Suffern’s middle and heavier weights don’t stack up to the little guys

So behind Garcia, Didio, Marc Diaz, and Joe Slane, North Rockland rolled. The Red Raiders are hot. The last three weeks they’ve won Shoreline, beat all area teams at Kohl (placed 4th overall), and won Counties.

A couple of interesting storylines. One was the dominance of Suffern’s lower weights. So extreme was it that Oliveto’s 112 finals opponent was teammate Dan Ventarola. They’d never met in a tournament before. It was a normal match; nobody pulled punches. As soon as it was over they stood up and hugged.

Another story was the upset of Clarkstown North’s Andrew Greenberg (119) by Nanuet’s John Morato. Morato scored on him early and was on his way to a decision when he pinned him at the 3:00 mark. It earned him MOW.

The best match of the finals was Matt Pragdat’s 2-1 quadruple-overtime win over Matt Mancuso. Pragdat tied the score at 1-1 with an escape with 22 seconds left in regulation. The Clarkstown South junior evaded several shots by Mancuso in OT, and told me after that his heart leapt every time Mancuso dove. Eventually came the fourth and last OT period. The 4OT rule is that the person who starts on the bottom has to escape or they lose. The person on top just has to keep them down and he wins. Pragdat got bottom. With about 10 seconds left (the period is only 30 seconds long) he got his feet under him and stood. Mancuso was holding on like someone was stealing his teddy bear. Pragdat’s legs were spinning as he pried Mancuso’s arm off. It came loose with seconds to spare. His spinning legs turned into a victory lap as he ran, instinctively, across the mat. As I said in my article for tomorrow’s paper, it reminded me of Shaggy and Scooby running away, where the legs go 100 mph but the body goes nowhere, then they suddenly bolt away. Zoinks!

The last thing that caught my attention was Garcia bouncing back nicely after losing his first match of the season last weekend. I get into that in my article so you can read it there.

Oh, Steve Ramos (152) of North should get a shout-out. He pinned all three opponents, two of them in the first round.

LaPorta edges Treinish and other Friday results

January
30

1) What was today’s most surprising team score?

2) What was today’s most surprising individual match result?

3) Which individual matchup featured the most talent between the two wrestlers?

If I can answer question 3 myself, I’d like to point out the super heavyweight match between Yorktown’s Eric LaPorta and Hen Hud’s Jake Treinish. It took three overtimes but LaPorta decisioned Treinish 3-2. LaPorta is the No. 2 seed at Super 16; Treinish is No. 1. I wonder if they’ll make a last-second switch after tonight’s result.

Super 16 seedings mistake

January
30

A few Mount Vernon kids were left out of the Super 16 seeding, so the seeds had to be redone. Also, Ardsley’s Robert Martin bumped up from 119 to 125.

In the post I made a minute ago, I asked if tonight’s LaPorta-Treinish decision would change the order of their seeds. Five seconds later my question was answered by email. LaPorta will take over the top spot after his win. Treinish moves to No. 2.

All of the changes are reflected in my original post on the Super 16 seeds. Just scroll down a little to find that.

Mogulus at Super 16

January
30

I just got the final word that we will be broadcasting the Super 16 tournament live on Mogulus. We’ve had some technical difficulties with the technology in the past so don’t bet your life on it working. But we’re keeping our fingers crossed.

If everything goes according to plan, you should be able to follow this link and see the video pop up live. Don’t tune in before 4 p.m. because we’re only broadcasting the finals. They’re expected to start between 4:30-5, give or take a half-hour.

For those who haven’t seen it before, Mogulus is the program that allows events to be broadcast live on the web. Lots of people can’t be at the Super 16 in person, and this provides a way for them to see the proceedings. After the finals are over, the video will reset and start rolling from the beginning. It will continue to replay in a continuous loop. Wrestlers and coaches can check it out after they get home and watch themselves. Again, it can be seen here.

January

I wrote a preview of tomorrow’s two big tournaments that appeared in today’s paper. You can read it here.

I’d like to expound on it but tonight is busy at the office and I’m helping the phone staff take some calls.

Super 16 seeding (UPDATED: 10:45 p.m.)

January
30

Just got the Super 16 seedings courtesy of Tom Josephson, who runs the computer at the tournament.

The first thing I noticed was a couple of Fox Lane names missing. Before I call Joe Amuso, can anyone tell me where Luke Speno and Steven Rodrigues will be this weekend?

As far as those who will be there, 125 looks great with Justis Flamio and Mike Rose at the top. Even Jay Concepcion was runner-up at Shoreline and makes a strong No. 3 seed.

UPDATE 1: Spoke to Joe Amuso about Rodrigues and Speno. He said both guys are nursing injuries and he doesn’t want to take a chance by sending them out this weekend. And he agreed that losing two huge point scorers tightens the field considerably. I also spoke to Ardsley’s Craig Zern, whose team has been given hope. With two No. 1 seeds and two No. 2 seeds and two fewer Fox Lane studs to contend with, Ardsley could strike a blow for small schools everywhere.

UPDATE 2: A few changes were made in the seedings which have since been corrected. I have changed them below to reflect that. Throw another contender into the stacked 125 ring as Robert Martin moves up.

Here are the seeds.

Seeds for Rockland County championships

January
29

How many No. 1 seeds do you see winning? What is the deepest weight class? Make your predictions now.

FYI, Rich Blauvelt thinks there was some clerical error when they did 103. Hence Justin Artrip ending up third. What it means is he’ll end up facing Anthony Calvano in the semifinals instead of Paul Fields, which he would have if he was seeded first.

Team key: Clarkstown North (CN), Clarkstown South (CS), East Ramapo (ER), Nanuet (N), North Rockland (NRk), Nyack (NY), Pearl River (PR), Suffern (Sf), Tappan Zee (TZ)

96 — 1. Asher Kramer (Sf), 2. Lucien Sevgre (ER), 3. Brian McLiverty (CS), 4. Colby Kash (CN)
103 — 1. Mike Caputo (NRk), 2. Anthony Calvano (N), 3. Justin Artrip (Sf), 4. Paul Fields (CN)
112 — 1. Nick Oliveto (Sf), 2. Dan Ventarola (Sf), 3. Nick Altomare (TZ), 4. Anthony Siminetti (NRk)
119 — 1. Andrew Greenberg (CN), 2. John Morato (N), 3. Jesse Rahimzadeh (N), 4. Kerven Dor (ER)
125 — 1. Joe Slane (NRk), 2. Joe Lieberman (PR), 3. Dave Bailen (Sf), 4. JT Dale (CN)
130 — 1. Greg Caneparo (N), 2. Julian Negri (Sf), 3. Dom Campitiello (CS), 4. Chris Greeley (CN)

More cost cutting for New York athletics?

January
29

It seems like every couple of weeks there’s another cost-cutting measure by the NYPHSAA or Section 1. The spring season has already seen the number of games reduced. Next fall we’re going to get a league realignment that puts geography ahead of competitiveness.

On the table are proposals to reduce out-of-state travel and centralize state playoff sites.

Now comes word about further cuts. The state is debating a proposal to reduce the number of classes in sports. Harold Gutmann has the full story here. This would drastically change the landscape of Section 1’s rivalries. Traditional powers that have always won sections in different classes will suddenly be pitted against each other.

It’s not finalized yet. You never know how the votes are going to go. But, like the economy, you figure it gets worse before it gets better.

New poll question on Super 16

January
28

Let’s assume Fox Lane, because of its recent tournament success, wins Saturday’s Super 16 tournament. Especially without John Jay there to be the yin to Fox Lane’s yang. I know, I know, some of you are going to dispute that. But let’s assume for a minute.

If it’s the case, who do you think will come in second? Mahopac? Sleepy Hollow? Ossining?

That’s what I ask in my latest poll question. The poll, remember, is on the right of the screen if you scroll down a bit. Vote for what you think. You can add answers as well if you think my choices missed somebody.

Remember to vote soon, because this question obviously has a deadline.

Oh, and if you really think someone’s going to beat Fox Lane, post a comment on this blog post telling me why.

And how about Ray Wang moving up to 189 and winning by tech fall?

Was anybody at Edgemont today that can talk about wither of these matches?

Suffern beats Ketcham 49-21

January
27

Just got back from Suffern, where the home team easily handled Ketcham 49-21. That included only one forfeit, at 96 pounds. The Mounties won seven of the first nine matches to go up 37-9.

Suffern has been missing guys to injury lately. It hurt them at the Kohl tournament, where four regulars sat. Two, Ethan Gomes (152) and Blake Ziffer (145), came back today. Gomes won by pin in the second period. Ziffer (left) decisioned his opponent 4-2 in overtime. Obviously their furloughs didn’t hurt them.

The other two injured guys, Vinny Giella and Brandon Kafka, sat today but are expected back for Counties this weekend.

Giella’s replacement at 135, Kervin Floreal (above), pinned his opponent at the 3:26 mark. He was trying to work an arm bar when he heard his coaches calling for a cradle. He sounded almost surprised that it worked so easily. Floreal has wrestled as high as 140 this year, but will be at 130 at Counties.

(UPDATE: You can read my story here.)

Suffern 49, Ketcham 21
At Suffern
96 — Dan McBrian (Sf) won by forfeit; 103 — Matt Spano (RCK) dec. Asher Kramer, 3-0; 112 — Nick Oliveto (Sf) tech. fall Tom Foy, 20-3; 119 — Dan Ventarola (Sf) tech. fall Mark Settembrino, 15-0; 125 — Frank Cabibbo (RCK) dec. David Bailen, 7-6; 130 — Julian Negri (Sf) pin. Kevin Sullivan, 1:50; 135 — Kerven Floreal (Sf) pin. Nick Wilki, 3:36; 140 — Elvis Taylor (RCK) dec. Willie Pirc, 6-3; 145 — Blake Ziffer (Sf) dec. Dave Simpfenderler, 4-2 OT; 152 — Ethan Gomes (Sf) pin. Danny Reis, 3:24; 160 — DJ Lupo (RCK) dec. Chris Milliaressis, 10-4; 171 — Mike Wagner (Sf) pin. Chris Lupo, 2:38; 189 — Chris Vanbeniscotter (RCK) dec. Mike Rodriguez, 18-11; 215 — Emmanuel Hnatko (Sf) pin. Billy Oakman, 3:50; 275 — James Evans (RCK) pin. Phil Tomassi, 0:57.

Feature on North Salem’s Ryan Osleeb

January
27

I got a chance to write my first wrestling feature of the season for today’s paper. It’s on Ryan Osleeb of North Salem. Osleeb, a 119-pound sophomore, is the only member of his school’s varsity team. He lives a different athletic existence than Section 1’s other wrestlers.

Osleeb can’t participate in dual meets. He has to travel to a different school, John Jay, every day for practice. At tournaments, he’s the only one in North Salem blue.

Osleeb practices with and sometimes travels with John Jay, which is the closest school to his. Coach Bill Swertfager welcomed him in three years ago and he’s become close with the Indian wrestlers. His uncle Jim McGinty, who nudged him toward wrestling a few years ago, is a John Jay assistant. But ultimately Osleeb is an island.

You can read my story here. I think it came out pretty well. What do you think? Did I miss anything? When you click that link you’ll also see a video box in the upper right corner. Hit play and there’s a short interview with Ryan, as well as footage of him at Saturday’s Beacon tournament.

Shakeups in the power rankings

January
27

I got a little bolder with this week’s power rankings, in Westchester/Putnam and Rockland.

Fox Lane did enough over the last two weekends to earn the top spot in Westchester/Putnam over John Jay. Just by a smidge, but it was enough. What I kept hearing when I took over the beat was that Fox Lane was the better tournament team and John Jay the better dual meet team. That appears to be bearing out. If John Jay looks more impressive in their upcoming duals, I can easily flip them back.

Things got shaken up even more in Rockland. I promised before the week that if North Rockland finished ahead of Suffern at the Kohl tournament, it would get the No. 1 slot. Who I was promising, I’m not sure. But hey, I’m a man of my word. So up the Red Raiders go. There was movement at the bottom too. After Nyack and Nanuet finished near the bottom at Kohl (following some dual meet losses the previous week) I felt I had to give Tappan Zee a shot. The Dutchmen get the 4-spot. Nyack moves down to 5.

Sleepy wins the Croton tournament

January
25

Just got off the phone with Croton coach Sam Occhipinti. He had all the individual finals and consolation finals results from yesterday’s Croton tournament but not team scores. Everything I got is below. He said he’d look for the team scores tomorrow at school and send them if he finds them.

Sleepy Hollow won the tournament in back-to-back years. Edwin Jimenez (96), David Martinez (135), Ryan Tompkins (171), and Gilli Bauer-Moshi (189) all won titles. Pleasantville was second and Onteora third. Pleasantville’s Mike Kar had the most impressive win, pinning his 103 opponent in 18 seconds.

There was no overall MOW. Instead one kid in each grade was named MOW. Jimenez got it for freshmen. Pawling’s Hector Santana (145) got it for sophs. Mount St. Michael’s Donovan Melendez (112) was the lead junior. Among seniors there was a tie between Tompkins and Pawling’s Rob Schmitt (152).

Here are the results. Under team key I listed the top three teams first. After that it’s just alphabetical.

Team key and scores: 1. Sleepy Hollow (SH), 2. Pleasantville (Pv), 3. Onteora (On).
Burke Catholic (BC), Byram Hills (BH), Carmel©, Clarkstown North (CN), Croton-Harmon (CH), Dobbs Ferry (DF), Hastings (Hs), John Jay (JJ), Mount St. Michael (MSM), Pawling (Pw), Port Chester (PC).
