Beacon tournament results

January
24

The Beacon tournament finals just came in over the phone. No surprise here as Fox Lane, John Jay, and Brewster finished 1, 2, and 3. They’re the top three teams in the Westchester/Putnam power rankings (though not in that order).

Sam Speno, Steven Rodrigues, Joey Grippi, and Luke Speno won titles for the victorious Foxes.

“It was a very good team effort,” Foxes coach Joe Amuso said. “We not only got the performances from the consistent wrestlers in the finals, but we also got points from the wrestle-backs.”

Below are the finals results. Note that in the team scoring only the top three have scores. Coach Amuso didn’t have anything beyond that. The other teams are listed alphabetically, not in the order they finished.

Team scores and key: 1. Fox Lane (FL) 197.5; 2. John Jay (JJ) 185; 3. Brewster (Bw) 175; Arlington (Arl); Beacon (Be), Half Hollow Hills (HHH), North Salem (NS), Ossining (O), Port Chester (PC), Valley Central (VC), Yorktown (Yk).

Full results from Edgemont (UPDATED)

January
24

The big story at Edgemont was 8th-grader Trey Aslanian. He wrestles at 96 pounds for the home team, but reporter Mike Dougherty said he barely made the minimum weight requirement. Why is he a story, you ask, other than being tiny? He actually won Most Outstanding Wrestler and the 96 pound title.

Edgemont also got a title from Genta Murayama at 130. It was his 141st career win. He already owns the most wins in school history.

Still, their efforts could not stop Horace Mann from capturing its eighth straight Edgemont team title. Mamaroneck was second and the home team was third.

Thakur is Section 1’s savior at Kohl tournament

January
24

Suffern coach Chris Matteotti promised to speed things along at the Kohl tournament, and he delivered. He had the finals started by 4:40 and the tournament wrapped up by 6:00. He used two mats for the finals to cut that time in half. He explained that because some teams had driven a long way to get there (notably Huntington, which came from Long Island) he wanted to give them time to get home.

His team did better than last year by moving up from seventh to fifth. The locals still came up short against the outsiders though. Monroe Woodbury won the tournament, Huntington (last year’s champ) was second and Cornwall was third. North Rockland finished fourth.

Incredibly, only one Section 1 wrestler won a title. Udit Thakur (above left) of Nyack took the 135 crown after handling Cornwall’s Tyler Lawlor 11-2 in the final. He did it on a throbbing knee too, which he hurt in the semifinals. The reigning sectional champ looked very strong on a day when the rest of the locals came up short. Section 1 wrestlers were 1 for 9 in the finals.

Asher Kramer (left) of Suffern and Jon Didio of North Rockland came closest. Both lost by three points. Kramer went down 3-0 and Didio 4-1.

Huntington’s Nigel McNeil was the MOW. He tech falled Suffern’s Nick Oliveto in the 112 final.

Here are full results.

Croton tournament seeds

January
23

The 33rd annual Croton tournament kicks off tomorrow. It features 14 teams, 11 of which are from Section 1. John Jay, wrestling as well as anyone in the section, is the favorite.

Below are the seeds. You’ll notice that the number of kids listed in each weight class is erratic. That’s because each class had a different number of seeds. 96 pounds, for example, only seeded one kid. I know it looks weird, but trust me, this is straight from coach Sam Occhipinti.

Team key: Burke Catholic (BC), Byram Hills (BH), Carmel©, Clarkstown North (CN), Croton-Harmon (CH), Dobbs Ferry (DF), Hastings (Hs), John Jay (JJ), Mount St. Michael (MSM), Onteora (On), Pawling (Pw), Pleasantville (Pv), Port Chester (PC), Sleepy Hollow (SH).

For coaches: Calling in results

January
23

A few people have been unhappy about missing dual meet results recently. Frankly I don’t blame them. We have seen too many dual meets not reported to The Journal News hotline. If they’re not called in to the hotline they don’t get in the newspaper. If they don’t get in the paper they don’t get in the blog. I print every single box score that comes our way. If it’s not on the blog or in the paper it means we never got it.

There are a lot of wrestling fans out there who want to follow the progress of teams or see how key matches played out. If the result isn’t reported, they’ll never find out. And there are a lot of reporters (OK OK, one reporter) who want to keep tabs on every wrestler in the section. If a result isn’t reported I miss a lot of information.

Just in case there are coaches out there who don’t know the procedure for reporting scores, here it is. The home coach is the one that calls us. Whether you win or lose, the visiting coach expects you to report the score. (The exception is if you are the road team traveling outside the Westchester/Putnam/Rockland area. Schools like Beacon, Arlington, Monroe-Woodbury, etc. don’t call us because they are out of our coverage area.) Call our scores hotline at 914-696-8888 between 5:30-10:45 with your results page handy. You can even have an assistant do it. One of our operators will take the results and put it in the paper. Try to have correct spellings for all the kids.

I know that after a long day it can be a pain in the butt to sit on the phone and rehash a 58-13 loss. You may not care if it gets in the paper at all. But I bet the other team wants its accomplishment out there. By not reporting it, you’re denying them the recognition, and denying the fans the information.

If you’re the visiting coach and your team won and you’re afraid the home coach won’t call it in, feel free to call us after 9 p.m. to make sure. Ask the operator to check whether the box score is there. If not, we will take the results from you.

Fans and athletes: if you notice that your team’s results have been missing, remind your coaching staff to report them. Don’t harangue them (coaches have enough stress already), just gently remind them.

If anyone—coaches, parents, kids, whoever—has questions, you can email me at jtthomas@lohud.com. If I can answer them I will.

I’ll start answering some of the frequently asked questions now: my favorite cartoon was He-Man, the meaning of life is to collect as many bobbleheads as possible, and no, I don’t want a piece of pie.

Section 1 falls farther in state rankings

January
22

Remember the good old days when John Jay was ranked 27th in Division I? The Indians are moving in the wrong direction despite not losing a dual meet. The latest state rankings have them ranked 38th. That’s only two spots away from dropping off the list altogether.

There’s still nobody local on the DII list. The honorable mentions, North Rockland and Somers, are the same.

Engage in democracy: VOTE

January
21

I’ve added a new feature to the Takedowns blog. Look at the right of the screen and you’ll see a poll question with six answers below it. Click the answer of your choice and it will be recorded. Once you’ve voted you can see how others have voted.

My question is, “What is the fourth-best team in Rockland?” I thought of this question while doing this week’s Rockland power rankings. Suffern and North Rockland are clearly the top two. Clarkstown North is below them but ahead of the rest of the field. But from there it’s a little muddled. Does Nyack deserve to remain No. 4 after two bad losses last week? You tell me.

I will change the poll every week so check back for new questions. Go ahead and suggest one if you want.

John Jay handles Brewster

January
21

Mike Dougherty was at Brewster today, where John Jay handled the home team 40-18 in a meeting of the top two teams in the Westchester/Putnam power rankings. It was closer than a 51-15 Indians win at the North County duals two months ago but clearly they aren’t in the same league yet.

The match of the day was at 130 pounds, where Mark Swertfager (left) decisioned Chris Gogatz in overtime. Swertfager, a Shoreline runner-up, had a 3-1 lead with 10 seconds to go, yet was whistled for stalling. Gogatz escaped to tie the score and almost pulled off a takedown for an unlikely win. Swertfager recovered in overtime to post a 5-3 win.

This is what Gogatz had to say about Swertfager: “I was fired up after he got the penalty. I thought five more seconds there and I might’ve been able to take him down. I have a lot of respect for Mark. I like wrestling good competition because it keeps you focused and makes you keep striving to get better.”

And what Swertfager had to say about Gogatz: “I knew it was going to be a tough match. I like that because you don’t get away with easy moves that might work on a lesser wrestler. Chris has a really good stance, and it’s hard to finish on him.”

Obviously a mutual respect there.

I’ll link to Mike’s story tomorrow when it’s posted on the website.

Empire State Games may be cancelled

January
20

I forgot to post this story over the weekend. Especially since I wrote it.

The 2009 Empire State Games are in real trouble after an organizing committee for the Hudson Valley region cancelled its involvement. The committee decided it could no longer support the Games after athletes were asked to pay $285, saying it violated the spirit of the Games. The committee, while not officially necessary, is vital to pulling off the event. Which means the ESGs are out of the Hudson Valley.

According to regional director Frank Intervallo, that likely means the Games will be cancelled in 2009. The process of finding a new host region, booking facilities, and recruiting volunteers is too complex to pull off between now and then. In a worst-case scenario, he suggested that a one-year hiatus could spell the permanent end of the ESGs. That’s a few steps away, though. There’s no official word on what’s going to happen to this year’s Games. But if the organizing committee holds firm there may be nothing the state can do.

This is a real blow to New York’s young athletes. There are plenty of kids in this area who were expecting to be a part of the Games, which were supposed to be held around Poughkeepsie. I’m sure the state government wishes it could sponsor everything as usual. We all know what’s going on with the economy and the state had to make cuts like everyone else. One of the victims was the ESGs, which got skewered by fees and cuts. The only way it can go off now is as a shell of its former self. Which the organizing committee decided wasn’t good enough.

My first power rankings

January
20

I left Eric’s power rankings mostly intact. As I continue to get my feet wet I may assert my opinion into the rankings a little bit more. But for now I didn’t see a reason to make big changes.

Mahopac did make its debut in the Westchester/Putnam rankings.

Rockland stayed the same despite some struggles by Nyack and Nanuet.

Tiebreakers and herpes

January
19

Wanted to pass along a couple of stories from other parts of the state.

In Staten Island, a meet between Susan Wagner and Tottenville ended in a 39-39 tie. Which happens. No problem, you go to the tiebreaker. Except that was a tie too. So the refs went to a second tiebreaker. Still even. They ended up having to go to the seventh tiebreaker: near fall points. You can read the short story here. Next time you’re talking to a referee offer him five bucks if he can tell you what the seventh tiebreaker is.

In slightly more disgusting news, Wantagh High School in Long Island has withdrawn from its next few events owing to one of its wrestlers coming down with “mat herpes.” It’s a herpes strain that’s spread by skin-to-skin contact. I know ringworm is a common concern in the wrestling community but I hadn’t heard of mat herpes before.

Pick a face, any face

January
19

Vote in the Gameface of the Week contest here. One of the choices (in fact I’d say a leading contender) is Will Carter of Westlake. He looks like he’s in mid-bellow. I think that photo was taken seconds after he pinned Lennie Graham at Shoreline. I remember him making a face like that.
