Sectional championships broadcast on the website

February
21

Today’s championship at Pace will be broadcast live on our Web site via Mogulus.

View it through this link.

I’m not sure exactly what time the Mogulus videographers are getting there, though I doubt it’ll be for the semifinals. The championship will certainly be broadcast, starting at 3 p.m.

If you miss it, don’t worry. Remember that Mogulus reruns on a loop. Click that link anytime after it’s over to watch the broadcast.

Matt Ng chimes in from Putnam Valley

February
20

Here’s Matt Ng’s thoughts on the small schools. Make sure you read his note at the end about the food. He was raving about it over the phone too. If Pace doesn’t have a good spread tomorrow I’m seriously afraid he’ll walk out.

A few things regretfully were left out of my story. Part of it was that with the top seeds winning the majority of the matches, most of the wrestlers’ thoughts and quotes kind of echoed each other.

I caught up with Putnam Valley’s Kris Castro, the top seed in the 215 at the cafeteria for lunch (more on that later on) after his quarterfinal win.

“It’s a lot different than last year, when I had to work my way into the finals. Now, I have a bye in the first round, second round, a good match, easy match, easy way to tomorrow and it feels good. It’s cool to be at home too.”

When asked about mental aspect of being the favorite: “It’s easy to be an underdog, last year. It’s harder to be the top seed.”

What kind of stuff are you working on to improve for the semi and hopefully finals?

“My speed. When I face lower weight, faster guys they are very hard for me. So I will have to lose some weight and get my foot speed up.”
—————————-
Here’s a breakdown of my thoughts on each class:

96- Very decisive victories by John Aslanian (Edgemont) and Drew Longo (Ardsley)….Third-seeded Matt Dillon of Nanuet was knocked off Brett Pastore (Irvington) in the quarters and then he lost in the con quarters.

103- Byes, byes and more byes. Only one match wrestled in this class all day…

112- All four top seeds advanced without much resistance…

119- Dobbs Ferry’s Teddy Kyreakedes had a tight 2-1 decision over Nanuet’s Jesse Rahimzideh…chalk…

125- Some were surprised by Andrew Mancusi beating fourth-seeded Michael Kane in a Westlake-Pleasantville next door village matchup. It was close.

130- Murayama might be the biggest lead pipe lock of this entire bracket…

135- The Huff comeback was very notable, the focus of my story. No. 2 seed Frank Oleszko had a close 3-2 decision over Dom Padilla… Wouldn’t be surprised to see Huff beat Oleszko (pictured left)…the two have met before…Huff lost on a close decision, he wants payback and has got the Big MO (momentum) on his side.

140- Put Valley’s Dan O’Gorman (No. 2 seed) needed OT to beat Woodlands’ David Figueroa…should have gotten more info on this one…

145- The Robert Spielvogel-Joe Holbeche 2-1 nailbiter was the only tightly contested match in this bracket.

152- The Shaq Charles-Will Carter semi should be interesting…

160- Second-seed Michael Morra was very candid about his close 6-4 win. “Without a doubt, I was a little disappointed that it came down to me on my back for the last couple of seconds but I still came out on top. I need to watch my head. Last time when he got me, my head was low.”

171- Kleckner Charles (KC…he likes being called KC) looked good. He could be a sleeper pick to win it all.

189- Steve Ramundo is tough…real tough. Torn Labrum, bone spur, dislocated shoulder tough… Robert Collins knocked off second seed, Jim Hughes…which might open the door for Ramundo to win it all…how about that.

215- Woodland’s Amos Pierette expended a lot of energy to beat Mike Zullo (Pleasantville)…will he have enough gas to fight Ryan Bostic?…I am not sure.

285- Mostly byes here…Won’t be like the tough and close matches of the Large school 285’s.——On an editorial note, I would love to give a shout out to the Putnam Valley parents and coaches who organized yesterday’s meet. Each round went without a hitch and in my estimation, the food in the cafeteria was the best spread that I ever had at a Section 1 event. Chicken Francese, Penne Vodka and
Meatballs, Rice…Chicken Wings and nice deli sandwiches. Honestly, I don’t know how any of the wrestlers will make weight after eating such a good spread.

First day big-schools results from Clarkstown South (UPDATED)

February
20

For a second I thought there’d be internet at Clarkstown South because a wireless network popped up on my computer. Unfortunately it was password protected and no one knew the password. So this is my first chance to update you beyond the few notes I passed to local sports editor Joe Lombardi.

The top two seeds in each weight class went through pretty much unscathed today, meaning the favorites are still in good shape. The lone exception was Harrison’s Mike Protano, a No. 2 seed, who fell in a 285 quarterfinal to Daytwan Vereen of Beacon. The top seed in 285 almost lost too. Cristian Garcia was down 3-0 in the third round to Tim Gecaj of John Jay. He escaped to make it 3-1. With about 25 seconds left he caught Gecaj leaning in and twisted him down to the mat for a 3-3 tie. Once on top he’s deadly. He pinned Gecaj with nine seconds left. Garcia told me that A) he thought he was going to lose, B) it was the worst he’s wrestled all year, and C) Gecaj is the second-best 285er in Section 1.

He’s a hard kid to beat. He’s got 25 pounds on me and he’s strong to boot. Like some kids are just big; he’s strong too. I wrestled bad. The nerves got to me. My senior year, last sections, want to be a two-time section champ. … I think he’s the second-best kid in the section, by far. But I think he’s young and doesn’t really have that much match time. I’ve seen him wrestle. He’s beating kids, and he gets caught and gets pinned. And thats why he’s in my bracket. He should have been down in the bottom bracket.

Several 3- and 4-seeds got bounced. Notables include Jake Srednicki of Mahopac — majored by New Ro’s Hunter Jones in the first round — and Rob Kantrowitz of Clarkstown North. Kantrowitz was decisioned 6-4 by Mamaroneck’s Femi Wheeler in one of the day’s better matches.

Another great one was Pat Fay’s 6-4 comeback win over Nathan Lustig of White Plains at 119. Fay (pictured right) is one of eight Foxes in the semifinals. You know the usual cast of characters. Fox Lane and coach Joe Amuso (below) are well on their way to winning another team title once they start racking up the finals bonus points. At the end of the day they were in second place behind John Jay, but wise observers tell me that will turn quickly once scoring starts tomorrow.

A couple guys got their 100th win today: Adam Finkelstein of Somers and Sal Marchese of Nyack. Both are still in the title hunt. Brewster’s Chris Gogatz got his 125th in wrestlebacks. It’s the most in school history.

Below are the quarterfinal and consolation quarterfinal results. Anyone who won in these rounds will be at Pace tomorrow

Team key and scores: John Jay (JJ) 95; Fox Lane (FL) 80; Arlington (Arl) 77.5; Carmel© 70; North Rockland (NRk) 67; Suffern (Sf) 61; Mahopac (M) 58.5; Ossining (O) 55; Beacon (Be) 52; Brewster (Bw) 46; Ketcham (RCK) 34.5; Clarkstown North (CN) 34; Sleepy Hollow (SH) 34; Somers (S) 33; John Jay-East Fishkill (JJEF) 33; Nyack (Ny) 29; New Rochelle (NR) 26; Hen Hud (HH) 24, Yorktown (Yk) 24; Port Chester (PC) 22; Scarsdale (Sc) 22; East Ramapo (ER) 21.5; Mount Vernon (MV) 21; Tappan Zee (TZ) 21; Lakeland/Panas (LP) 18.5; White Plains (WP) 13; Clarkstown South (CS) 11; Harrison (H) 11; Eastchester (E) 8; Mamaroneck (Mk) 8; Yonkers (Yk) 5; Pearl River (PR) 4; Peekskill (Pk) 3; Rye® 2; Horace Greeley (HG) 0.

Large school changes

February
19

There were a few amendments to the large school bracket. I made the changes to my earlier post on all the first round matchups. You may want to double check the matchups if you have a horse in the race.

“Call the Champions” contest

February
19

If there’s an upset at sectionals, some people will turn to their friends and go, “I knew Steve Rodrigues would lose in the first round!” Those people are liars. But there are some of you that really can pick an upset or two. And I want to give you a chance to prove it.

The Takedowns blog will host the first annual Call the Champions contest, where you, the mighty and knowledgeable reader, get to make predictions about who will win sectionals. Your picks will be committed to cyberspace permanently so if your friends don’t believe you you can show them the page.

Entering is simple. Leave a comment under this blog post and paste the following template into it.

Fill in each weight class with the champion of your choice. You don’t need to put the other finalist. Just the champion. At the conclusion of sectionals I’ll score all the entries with one point for each correct answer. (As a tie-breaker, please put an * next to the wrestler who’ll win MOW.)

I’ll declare a winner and shower that person with praise in this forum. You’ll be the envy of everyone who reads Takedowns. If our respect isn’t enough, the winner will also get to write a guest blog post previewing the state tournament (or whatever else they want).

Some of you already made predictions and posted them under another blog entry. That’s no problem. Just copy and paste it into a comment under this blog post to enter.

Lenzi is going back to states

February
18

Fordham Prep’s Andrew Lenzi is once again on track to establish himself as the best wrestler in the area.

The Cortlandt Manor resident was named Most Outstanding Wrestler at the New York State Catholic Wrestling Championships, which concluded Monday in Buffalo. Lenzi pinned his way through the first three opponents at 135 before tech falling Brandon Ayala of St. Anthony’s 29 seconds into the second round, 17-2.

He has to wait nine days without a match before entering the state championships in Albany. As a sophomore he won a state title last year, the only local to do so.

“He’s definitely wrestling better (than last year),” Fordham Prep coach David Obiese said. “He’s pinning more. Which is excellent. That’s what I want him to do. The more you pin the shorter your matches will be.”

Lenzi is 39-3 on the year with 152 wins for his career.

Neither Fordham Prep nor Iona Prep had other Catholic champions. Fordham’s John Palladino took second. Iona’s Ross McMahon took third.

Which top seed is the biggest lock?

February
16

Now that the brackets are set for large schools, it’s time to start looking at paths to a championship. Who has an easy road? Who has a difficult one?

For this week’s poll question, I want you to tell me which No. 1 seed is the biggest lock to win a sectional title. It doesn’t matter whether you think it’s because he’s great or because his competition isn’t. If you had to bet your family dog on one No. 1 seed, who would it be?

I’ll put down a couple of names. If you feel like someone is missing you can add him. But remember, this only applies to No. 1 seeds.

Last week’s question asked which of the four divisions was the toughest. Thirty-nine percent of you said Division 4 at John Jay-East Fishkill was the hardest.

Matt’s parting thoughts from Division 4

February
15

Matt Ng had a few last thoughts from Division 4. Here’s what he said:

Just from looking at the top seeds of this tournament, all 15 No. 1 seeds were able to advance to the finals. For those in some of the lightweight and heaviest classes, this is not a surprise since there were some byes. Of those 15, No. 1 seeds that are finalists, only three of them lost, Dale White of John Jay-EF in the 103, Patrice Castor of East Ramapo in the 215 and Tim Gecaj in the 285.

Castor and Gecaj both went to overtime and lost in very evenly fought, close matches. Also as the saying goes in the NCAA tournament, “chalk” won out.

Of the 15, No. 2 seeds, 12 of them made it to the finals, showing yet again that the higher seeds were dominant.  Third-seeded Suffern’s Julian Negri in the 130, wrestled Mark Swertfager in the final, Swertfager said that he didn’t wrestle Negri before in the Dual Meet championship or at any other tournament both Suffern and John Jay were at. After their match that went the distance, Swertfager was seen running up and down the hallways to keep his heart rate up.

The Brandan Kafka (Suffern)- Rob Kantrowitz (Clarkstown North) final in the 140 was very heated.  It was a rematch of the Rockland final that Kantrowitz won.The Clarkstown North contingent booed Kafka at the end of the match. There was only one or two seconds left in regulation from a stoppage and the crowd reacted to Kafka swiping at Kantrowitz’s head. Kantrowitz was fuming and surely if they see each other again, it should be highly emotional.

Yorktown senior Nick Genovese was smiling ear-to-ear after his impressive pin of Steve Moody. He had him vertically pinned, with Moody’s feet flying in the air.

Port Chester’s Jean-Claude Roldan made a valiant run to the Con Finals of the 125 which earned him a sectional bid, John Jay’s Jay Smith won the 130 Con Finals against Robert Henry after losing to Henry in the quarterfinals.”

Parting thoughts on Division 1

February
15

There were a few items I didn’t have a chance to squeeze into my story about Division 1. Space is limited in the paper. But thanks to the magic of the interweb, I can ramble on the blog for as long as I want. In fact, tomorrow I’m going to start detailing my relationship problems in excruciating detail.

Oh Sandy, why don’t you love me!!!

Just kidding. I don’t even know a Sandy.

Anyway, one of the best matches of the day was one I didn’t get into in the story. It was at 285, where Harrison Mike Protano beat Hen Hud’s Jake Treinish 5-2. So many super heavyweight battles end in pins, but this was never close to that. Most of the match was spent on their feet. In fact the whole first period was wrestled at neutral. You ever see a nature show where a couple of rams lock horns and they just kind of push and twist their heads a little but nothing is accomplished because neither one is strong enough to force the other down? That’s exactly what this looked like. Treinish finally scored in the second, only because he was on bottom and escaped. Protano came back with the same thing in the third, then added a couple of takedowns for the win.

At the other end of the weight spectrum, I continue to lament the crowding at 96. Poor Andrew Planamento could have been a division champ in D2 or D3 (maybe not D4, where Asher Kramer was). Instead he didn’t even make sectionals because of the stacked class at Yonkers. The four who did survive should be grateful.

Other than Kramer, they won’t see better at sections than they saw yesterday. Take Brewster’s Mike Parise. He only finished in fourth place, meaning he’ll get a pretty low seed at sectionals. Except he beat Planamento, lost to Jimmy Duckham by a point (1-0), and gave Sam Speno his biggest challenge (an 8-1 loss). Bet the farm he’ll be “upsetting” some higher seeds next weekend.

Seeding meeting is Monday

February

Blog reader “junior” asked me about the seeding meeting today. I just spoke to Section 1 coordinator Eric Romanino, who said the meeting is going to be tomorrow at 11 a.m.

I’ll post sectional seeds as soon as they’re ready.

Divisional madness!

February
15

What a crazy day yesterday. Four divisions happening at the same time, and all the information funneling back to me at the office. We had a reporter on site at all four, so today’s newspaper has the scoop on each site.

I was at Yonkers for Division 1, which you can read about here. Although Arlington edged out Fox Lane in total qualifiers, 12-11, the day belonged to the Foxes. They had six champions and two others that lost in the finals to teammates. I also wrote about Mount Vernon’s Ryan Wallace, a No. 9 seed who wrestled for the first time three months ago yet fought his way into sectionals. I’ll have more parting thoughts on Division 1 later.

Justin Jones was at North Rockland for Division 2, which you can read about here. It hosted one of the best matchups of the weekend, a 171 final between Ossining’s Clay Neivert and Nyack’s Sal Marchese. Neivert pinned him in the third round for his first divisional title. Other winners included North Rockland’s Joe Slane and Mahopac’s Justis Flamio.

Mike Dougherty went to Somers for Division 3, which you can read about here. He certainly saw the most interesting MOW situation. Carmel’s Doug Chiapperino won it in a very unconventional tiebreaker over Beacon’s Ryan Tompkins (not to be confused with Sleepy Hollow’s Ryan Tompkins, who was also in Division 3). Make sure you read to the bottom of the story. There’s an interesting nugget about Somers’s Adam Finkelstein getting saved by the bell in his final with Sleepy Hollow’s Ryan Tompkins (not to be confused with Beacon’s Ryan Tompkins).

Finally, Matt Ng was at John Jay-East Fishkill for Division 4. You can read his very descriptive story here. The heavyweight and super heavyweight finals lived up to the hype, as both went to overtime. Pat Sweeney beat Patrice Castor at 215 and Eric LaPorta edged Tim Gecaj at 285. John Jay’s “Murderer’s Row”—the four guys between 119 and 135—all won out too.
