Hayes Yorks passes away

March
6

Former Pearl River coach Hayes Yorks, 71, passed away early yesterday morning. He suffered a stroke while vacationing in Florida with wife Jane that sent him into a coma. His son and three daughters were called down to be at his bedside. He was then taken off life support.

It was his second stroke. Fourteen years ago he had a smaller one that left his partially paralyzed.

Yorks coached the Pirates varsity from 1980-89. In 1984-85 they won a Section 1 championship. He also spent various stints as modified, JV, and freshman wrestling coach, as well as an assistant on the football team. His son Grier helms the wrestling team now.

Yorks was described to me as a mountain of a man, huge and strong but gentle as well. He was said to dwarf his son (pictured in 2006), no Tiny Tim himself. Former AD Tom Doherty referred to him affectionately as Uncle Hayes.

    Jake,

Thank you for posting the info on the passing away of Hayes Yorks on the Wrestling Blog. I would encourage Hayes’ many friends to visit the web-site set up to remember him at http://hayesyorks.ning.com/ There has been a scholarship fund set up to honor Hayes. Contributions can be sent to Tom Collins, Athletic Director, Pearl River School District, 275 E. Central Avenue, Pearl River, NY 10965. Checks payable to “Hayes Yorks Memorial Scholarship Fund.” Also, there will be a Memorial Service sometime in late April or early May in Pearl River. More info to follow at a latter date.

    Jake,

This past weekend Jon Bonilla-Bowman, a redshirt junior from Hofstra formerly from East Ramapo won the CAA wrestling championship at 157. He will next be competing at the NCAA Division 1 Championships in St Louis, MO on March 19, 20 and 21. This is his second CAA title to go along with the ACC championship and “Outstanding Wrestler Award” that he won wrestling for Virginia Tech his freshman year. It might be information that his family, friends and our Section One Wrestling family would be interested in reading.
You have done a great job promoting our sport, and I feel that this may motivate the wrestlers in our section to see that they too can be successful. Thank you

WORST WRESTLING SITE EVER. 3 DAYS NOW AND NO NEW NEWS. THE EASTERN STATES TOURNY PLEASE!

  5. There

Unfortunately, Jake is now onto a new season. We were lucky Tony was a year-round wrestling fanatic who always provided the latest wrestling news. I keep checking back hoping for something new but I am always disappointed. Even the Section One forum has been quite dull lately.

Also, I don’t think you mean the Eastern States Tourny because that already took place back in early January. Which tournament are you referring to? The High School Nationals in Virginia?

pay not attention There, Mahopac/Lakeland fan is one of the worst bloggers ever!!!!!!! lol

even if its the worst wrestling site ever, for section 1 fans you only have 2 to choose from well 3 i guess but nywrestling.com might actually be the worst website ever….

i wish you would say who you are, most people know who i am and i have posted my e-mail at times, but i also dont come on here to blast the people who put out this blog, just take shots at mindless bloggers every now and then, to attempt to put them in their place

again don’t bite the hand that feeds you, you want wrestling info on the blog harassing Jake probably isnt the best way to get it
