Semifinal and consolation results

March
9

We are continuing to have wireless problems here at the Blue Cross Arena and we (reporters) are not receiving an assistance so folks, please be patient today.

11:11 Ryan Leblanc (3-Morrisville-Eaton) tech. fall Will Carter (Westlake), 17-2.

10:54: John Greisheimer 9 (Wantagh) pin. John Coffey (Pearl River), 3:08. Greisheimer took Coffey down quickly and then tilted him for a 4-0 lead after one.

10:54: James Brundage (Ossining) dec. Jesse Villella (4-Chenango Forks), 4-1. Brundage scores a second-period reversal to take a 2-0 lead. Brundage will place in the top six.

10:54: Zeke Stambovsky (Nyack) dec. Brendan Dwyer (5-Pittsford), 5-4. Stambosky trailed 4-3 early in the third, but reversed Dwyer and was close to tilting him twice.

10:54: David Rice (Edgemont) dec. Matt Matt Cartusciello (PSAL-Petrides), 4-2. Rice had a second-period bar and an escape point.

10:54: Cody Legg (Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk) dec. Ray Wang (Edgemont), 5-2.

10:54: Genta Murayama (Edgemont) dec. Brett Sewalt (4-Waverly), 3-1 in overtime. I missed this match.

10:02: Ryan Blauvelt (3-Oswego) dec. Dominick Oddo (Mahopac), 8-7. Oddo led 7-5 entering the third period. He cut Blauvelt to open the period. Blauvelt was in on a shot attempt with about 30 seconds remaining, but Oddo forced a stalemate. Blauvelt came right back and hit a low double to upset Oddo.

9:56: Andrew Lenzi (CHSAA-Fordham Prep) maj. dec. Brandan McKeown (Burnt Hills/Ballston Lake), 14-5. Lenzi secured a takedown and put McKeown right to his back in the opening seconds for a quick 5-0 lead. Lenzi would lead 7-1 after one and was never in any danger. Lenzi will face Brian Benton (2-Amsterdam) in the 130-pound final.

9:41: Shawn Brown (10-Canton) dec. Joey Grippi (Fox Lane), 8-7. What a gut-wrenching defeat for Grippi, who hit a high single and put Brown to his back with seven seconds remaining in the match for a 7-3 lead, but Brown, who had underhooks in, flipped Grippi over and to his back for a four-point move in the final seconds.

9:37: T.J. Popolizio (2-Shenendehowa) dec. Mark Arcara (Harrison), 2-0. Popolizio scored a first-period takedown. In the second period, he rode Arcara out, running a bar series, but was unable to turn Arcara. Popolizio chose bottom for the third period. Arcara appeared to have Popolizio tilted with 37 seconds left, but Popolizio got to his belly. The official got to a one count.

9:32: Joe Smaldone (5-Geneva) dec. Ryan Osleeb (North Salem), 8-3. A pair of first-period takedowns for Smaldone, including one in the final few seconds, was the difference as he led 4-1.

9:20: Justis Flamio (Mahopac) dec. Steven Keith (11-Shoreham Wading River), 8-3. After Flamio lost to Keith in last year’s 96 semifinals, he returned the favor. Flamio and Keith traded a takedown and reversal, respectively, in the first period. A Keith shot attempt resulted in a stalemate early in the second period. Flamio hit a shot and put Keith to his back for four points and a 6-2 lead. Keith escaped to open the third, but failed to get in on Flamio. Flamio will face Nick Arajau (8-Syosset) in the 112 final.

9:13: C.J. Howard (5-Pittsford) dec. Steven Rodrigues (Fox Lane), 1-0. A second-period escape was the lone point. Howard sank legs immediately in the third period. He was banged for a stall warning with 36 seconds remaining.

9:02: Brian Realbuto (Somers) dec. Shane Connolly (9-Warwick Valley), 5-3. A second-period reversal and 3-point tilt powers Realbuto into the consi semis and a top-6 finish.

Semifinal Sunday

March
9

The wrestles are on the mat preparing for what they are hoping will result in state championships.

The semifinalists once again are:

112 – Justis Flamio (Mahopac) vs. Steven Keith (11-Shoreham Wading-River). Keith is the 2007 Division I 96-pound state champion. Keith beat Flamio in last year’s semifinals.

112 – Ryan Osleeb (North Salem) vs. Joe Smaldone (5-Geneva). One thing Osleeb can expect is legs. Section 5 wrestlers are notorious for running legs and they do it quite effectively.

125 – Joey Grippi (Fox Lane) vs. Shawn Brown (10-Canton).

130 – Andrew Lenzi (Fordham Prep) vs. Brandan McKeown (2-Burnt Hills/Ballston Lake).

145 – John Coffey (Pearl River) vs. John Greisheimer (8-Wantagh). Greisheimer decisioned New Rochelle’s Tom Antonioli, 11-6 in the quarters yesterday.

160 – Will Carter (Westlake) vs. Ryan Leblanc (3-Morrisville-Eaton).

I’ll update each semi-final match and also keep you posted on the wrestleback results. The wrestlers still active in wrestlebacks are:

Brian Realbuto (Somers)
Steven Rodrigues (Fox Lane)
Mark Arcara (Harrison)
Genta Murayama (Edgemont)
Dominick Oddo (Mahopac)
Derrick Longo (Ardsley)
David Rice (Edgemont)
Ray Wang (Edgemont)
James Brundage (Ossining)
Zeke Stambosky (Nyack)
